As a former L&D nurse there are 5 characteristics we look for that are indicative of Downs Syndrome. Most often prenatal screening and testing either rules in or rule out the diagnosis. The presence of one or two traits alone is not enough to diagnose DS, but the presence of 4 or 5, in general can qualify as diagnostic criteria. However, most doctors and families choose to have a blood test to actually count the number of chromosomes. is this something you are experiencing?

If they have an extra chromosome they have down syndrome. While screening during pregnancy can flag false positives, and initial diagnoses based on the babies appearance can be wrong, the chromosomal karyotype is pretty definitive.

I guess it's the same as any other diagnosis.
Are you questioning one? If so, get a 2nd opinion.
It's also best to offer as much information as possible when posting so people know how to answer you instead of having to ask questions to clarify.
