what kind of books interest 8 - 12

How can I get a kids around 8 -12 (both boys and girls) to pick up a book on their own. They pout in the library and so I pick out the books. Always the wrong choice. I pick books with fun colorful pictures and topics I think are fun, but alas they sit on the desk until I want to yell and scream-instead I return them and try again. Real productive seeing as I am the new step-parent.

Hi there Deanna, Getting kids to read can be a bit of a challenge. How do they respond to story telling? getting a child to read once they are a bit older is more about getting them interested from what I've seen. Perhaps you ask them what kind of stories they like. If you and your partner find it appropriate you could even try audio books of harry potter (the first few books and the later ones are aimed at a slightly older demographic than 8-10's) or other children's books of a slightly more simple and childlike area such as Enid Blyton books. But the important thing is to find out what kind of >stories< they like. Once you get them into a particular story particularly one with multiple books, going from you or an audio book telling the story to them reading it will be a bit easier. I hope this helps :)
