What should I do when my baby doesn't like baby rice?

I have a nearly 5-month old baby girl with a milk protein allergy. She's on Similac Alimentum formula, and as anyone whose baby uses this knows, it smells pretty awful. Recently, she's never full and is consuming bottle after bottle, so I thought the time was probably right to start her on baby rice. I mix a little with her formula, and it doesn't exactly smell appealing, so probably doesn't taste wonderful either.
Well, she hates it. She makes the most over-dramatic retching "throw-uppy face" (without ever actually throwing up), and while she will swallow it, she's clearly not enjoying it. My son (now 11) couldn't get enough of the stuff when he was a baby, and right from day one, he was obviously loving it.
So, any advice? Do you think it's the taste she objects to, and if so, could I mix it with something other than her formula to make it taste better? Bearing in mind, she has this milk protein allergy.

Any advice appreciated, thanks!

When my daughter was that young the only flavor of ANYTHING other then breastmilk she liked was banana. She had banana chunks, banana rice cereal, and those banana flavored mum mums. You just have to watch out because bananas are constipating...

Baby rice doesn't really do a whole lot for a baby. It's just to get them used to eating.

How much formula is she getting every day? She might be eating a lot because she's gearing up for a growth spurt -- that often happens around this time.

Well, the general rule of thumb for formula is 2.5 - 2.7 oz per pound of body weight. So if she's 17.5 oz, she should actually be eating about 44 - 47 oz of formula a day.

So this increased appetite sounds perfectly normal. I would keep giving her an 8oz bottle in the morning, and maybe another one before bed, and then use your judgment for the others.

Really, there's no point in twisting yourself in knots trying to get her to eat rice cereal. She's still only 4 months old, so she doesn't need solids at all.

She's eating around 35-40oz a day, and weighs around 17.5lbs. Up until recently she's only been able to manage 4oz bottles at a time but now she wants 6oz bottles and even then it's not enough - her morning feed can be 7-8oz. Maybe doesn't sound like a lot, but she was a very tiny baby when she was born, and her appetite has never been huge, until recently!
