The weight limits are usually between 50-60 pounds....that being said my 5 year old only weighs 40 and he fits in a toddler. We moved him about a year ago into a loft bed to put his sisters toddler bed under him. I think it is up to you. My son was in his toddler bed for over 3 years before he moved.

You shouldn't use toddler beds past age 5, weight limits are up to 50 pounds. And eventually you will need a twin size bed anyway.. but its really up to you.
