I started as soon as I found out. That way I had plenty of time to get organised. Some people say it's bad luck or not safe to start before the 12 week mark but I found it helped to get me into mummy mode and except that soon my world would change for the better. I recommend garage sales and trademe for the items that you don't mind whether they are brand new or not. Good luck and most importantly enjoy this time, it is precious.

i started late 2nd trimester.... just incase she came early.... i believe in being prepared.... bur some say wait till mid 3rd trimester, but in my openion you will be too uncomfortable moody and tired by then!!!
I absolutely hate having boxes laying around my house, HATE IT!!! So pre-buying diapers was not on my list of things to do!!! Saving money for diapers however is a must!!! I have a 2 mos old NB only fit the first week (born @ 8lb 2 oz) Size 1 diapers fit until 6wks and he is now in size 2, all of that in the first 2 mos! You figure about 10 diapers a day...we had to buy a little over 100 diapers for a 2wk period (between paydays) until we got a build up and could stick w/the 100, you also go through wipes LIKE CRAZY!!!
We bought stuff after the ultrasound @ 5 mos when we found out the gender. If you have a good group of ppl that will really be helping you with high ticked items for your shower you may want to wait until after that, other wise I'd say if you have the money get it! If you find a sale, take it! Boppy pillows are awesome! Vibrating chairs rock too!

In the UK we don't do showers (shame!). I bought a handful of things after my 20 week scan, a couple of vests and all in ones.
But then I had my baby at 27 weeks, so nothing fit for a long long time, and I didn't buy anything until the week before he came home!
There's always shops and internet, so I think you can leave it as long as you like, or do it as early as you like!

with my first, I was terrified of being "jinxed" or to positive because there were so many uncertainties with my pregnancy and I refused to shop or allow anyone to shop for the baby until I was 7months along.
For the next two I started after month 3 and month 5.
i started getting stuff when i was 9 weeks there is not much you can get untill you no the sex your baby but you can get toys an socks an crib an stuff so then when you find out alls you have to get is clothes an bedding an blakets

I waited until I was through the first trimester - I didn't want to jinx it, LOL :). It is a good way to stretch the budget, just paying for things a little at a time over 6 months. I started laybying the big stuff and making regular payments, and also buying small bits and pieces along the way.

I only bought one outfit before I had my baby. I came across it while I was looking arround at ROSS while my Fiance was getting his hair cut next door and left still thinking about the outfit. It was mother's day so after brunch we went back to get it. It was size 9 mos. so she still can't fit into it.
I was in the hospital at the time of both my baby showers so I recieved some gifts while I was in there and didn't really need to buy anything. My daughter stayed in the hospital for 17 days so we had time to go shopping for her after her birth.
I was planning on waiting until after my baby shower to buy anything.

I started garage sale shopping for both genders before I knew what I was having. The clothes are cheap and you can always re-sell them. I didnt get alot of the bigger ticket items until about 8 months. That way you can see what you get at your baby showers first.
