When Should I start brushing my Son's teeth?

My son has 8 teeth and is 9 months old tommorrow. I have been wiping his teeth with a rag since he got his first tooth at 2 months. However I feel like I am getting mixed advice. Some people say a year others say as soon as the first tooth comes in. When do you feel that it is appropriate to brush his teeth with a tooth brush and toothpaste?

I started brushing my daughter's teeth with a flouride-free toothpaste as soon as she got teeth at 8 months old. My dentist said there wasn't much he could do for her until she was 2-3 years old.

The dentist suggested to go when they are about 1 year old. I should also mention that she recommended using pronamel for kids, especially when they start drinking juice (she also recommended staying away from juices tho lol).

I recently went to the dentist and asked the same thing. My daughter is only 3 months but I wanted an idea of when to start and what to do. She advised me that 6 months after they get their first tooth, you should take them for a visit to the dentist. Regarding using a toothbrush, she recommended using a cotton ball with a small amount of children's toothpaste and quickly wipe each tooth. I would ask your dentist about using a toothbrush on the first visit. I hope this helps you.

The rag for now is good enough. I started my son with a toothbrush around 9 months, but it was about getting him used to it, and getting me in the habit of brushing is teeth.

I don't use toothpaste even with my 3 year old, swallowing fluoride is not good, and the fake sugars in the kids kinds freak me out.

Great responses below. Always check with a dentist. The rag is good enough for now and around 2 years old introduce your child to the dentist.

as soon as my son got teeth i started, before that i was just wiping his gums. definetly start soon. when they get to be toddlers they sometimes fight teeth brushing so if you start early they will just see it as routine.
