When should my 20 month old be holding utensils correctly?

My son is a little over 20 months. He feeds himself well with a spoon not so much a fork. However my question is when should my son be holding a spoon correctly? Right now he holds it in a tight fist and scoops. He does not exactly hold it with his thumb and pointer and resting it on his middle finger.

I am glad to help. Not all kids are going to do the milestones at the same exact time. Each kid is unique and remember this so if someone is giving you a hard time with it say he will do it soon enough. Just like talking, some kids are right on mark and some are a bit behind but that does not mean they are delayed.

Thank you! Im so glad you posted that because i was getting nervous he was delayed as some of my friends kids already hold it correctly. But you made me feel better. I will just continue having him watch me how i eat and he will get it when he is ready!

He is right where he needs to be with that. He is still experimenting with how things work. You can not expect a child of this age to hold a spoon or fork just like an adult. Most kids by the time they get to two years actually get the idea of how to hold a utensil. Do not push him let him learn on his own.
