When should my baby be on a schedule?

I have been stressing out over the last week because my four week old is not on some sort of the schedule yet. I make sure he eats every 2 1/2 to 3 hours but our mornings never start at the same time and his sleep and activity periods vary from him sleeping all day to being awake for seven hours straight one day! I'm going to go back to work after 12 weeks and I'm nervous that we won't have things in order by that time but whenever I tried to get him going on a schedule it always seems to fall apart and I stress out about it to the point where I'm in tears. I read the baby whisperer and trying to get him on the EASY schedule isn't working. He often loves to fall asleep on the boob and be awake before feedings.
