When to upgrade to a 'big boy bed'

The thought of moving our 22 month old boy to a bed rather than his cot really never crossed my mind yet....He sleeps sooooooo well in his cot, just put him in at nap time and he takes himself off to sleep and sleeps minimum 10 undisturbed hours a night....i'm so sure if he was put in a bed it would take him 0.2 second to figure out he can get out his bed whenever he wanted.....not a good thought.

Believe me they decide them selfs my little girl Sarie Yvonne was 11mnths when she went to a big bed and my baby Elmarie that is 1yrs 7mnths is still in the cot she doesnt want to sleep in a bed. He will come to a point that he climbs out of the cot by him self my little one does it

we left my oldest in the cot but took off the side that drops down and put on a bed rail, he was about 2 as i was pregnant with my second and didnt want him to think of the cot as his. my 2nd was out around 2 as he kept getting his leg stuck trying to get out and i did the same with the bed rail neither of them seemed to get out when they were going to sleep.

Surprise surpprise, my little girl is 24 months old and she has been in a bed now for 1 week and its working awesome, because i am due with my second child i had to change her rooms etc. I put her cot base on the floor with her cot mattress ontop and along side a wall(no sides on it) and she hasnt even got out once night or morning, she absolutly loves it she thinks she is very special. I will eventually raise her to a single bed once she is aware of her space.

I use to have the same problem, but theres not much difference,my boys learnd how to climb out of they're cribs...as long as he's independent and it seems like he is sleeping shouldnt be a problem. My 5 yr old is always up early no matter at what time he falls asleep. In the other hand my 3yr old still naps and he wakes up in the late morning. As long as he's sleepy he will.
Good luck

Thanks every one for all the great comments! I think i'll keep him in his cot/crib a bit longer. He's really happy in it and sleeps so well - maybe i'll get him a big bed when he stops a day nap as i've a feeling that it would be difficult to get him to lie down and nap if he can get out easily! Good luck with your sons 1st night in his big bed Sharon! Let us know how it went :-)

I moved my now 4 year old at 16 months...he actually did great. I never had to put a baby gate in his door way or shut him in in any way. My now 13 month old is working her way to a big bed if she keeps climbing on stuff next thing she will be climbing on is her crib I can feel it.

Our son is having his first night in the big boy bed tonight and I have a feeling I'm going to be VERY tired tomorrow! he's only16mths, but tosses & turns all night long and whacks into the cot sides continually. He sleeps fabulous in our bed, so we are hoping it continues in his own bed. Fingers crossed.

We moved my son at 25 months, and only because we needed his crib for our new baby...I probably would have kept him in it a lot longer otherwise, because he slept so well and never tried to climb out. It was a very easy transition for him, though, and he still sleeps great and stays in bed. I like his double bed so I can lay with him and read stories before bed.

Suze, I didn't move my daughter until she was almost 3 1/2. She was very little, so she still fit in it well, and she NEVER attempted to climb out, so why not? However, if he has in any way made attempts to get out on his own.....time for a bed.

You'll be surprised how well they usually do stay in a bed. I moved my son before he was 2, and I didn't have an issue with him getting out of bed anytime he wanted. Didn't have problems with my daughter either.
