Can anyone help me explain (in simple terms) to my 5-year old daughter where saliva comes from?

try this site, it is good :) and the major saliva glands are not in or on the tongue ( not sure there are any on the tongue actually) saliva enters our mouth under the tongue and in two main areas on the inside of the cheeks. the website explains a way to talk about glands :) explaining our bodies can be difficult and sometimes embarassing at times but it's important to stay honest and keep things at the childs level of understanding. It's a very long conversation lasting 18years about sex, babies and our bodies (and bodily functions lol)...ohh the joys of parenting :)

Good luck!

At the top of your tongue there are glands in your mouth that release saliva.

If a child asked me this, I would say "it comes out of glands inside your mouth", or maybe "out of tiny holes inside your mouth" since she wont understand glands, but then she might go looking for the holes!

What a good question! I love the things kids ask. :)

Thanks Katherine. Am sure the next question she will ask me is what a gland is. Well, I need to prepare myself for endless questions, though. Thanks again.
