We always take our children with us. My husband and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary in Las Vegas with kids. Everyone had fun. We stayed in a suite at The Hotel. They had great pools complete with a wave pool and lazy river. We took a tour of the Hoover dam and grand canyon. We splurged on one show. We saw KA. We saw the sights in Las Vegas such as the fountains, strip and beautiful hotels. Las Vegas can be family friendly. :)

Oh and by the way, I just got back from Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys... BEST beach there! Water is turquiose and clear. Just be careful between June and August.... my brother lives down there and says those are the bad months. We went in May... The drive is awesome and if you go to Key West, take a LOT of cash. Most of the shops don't take any plastic! The sunset is just breath-taking!

If you want to go somewhere VERY family-oriented, go to San Diego, California. Stay at the Bed and Breakfast in Balboa Park: http://www.balboaparkinn.com/
The park is beautiful, the Zoo is right there, restaurants, ocean... great for families! Go see Old Towne... great shops. Been going there since I was a little kid...

Don't know how extravagant you're willing to go....but the best vacation spot we ever had was Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys. The water was only waist deep on my 2 year old son, and crystal clear, plus the sand under the water was clean, soft and white. The beach was sandy too, which is unusual in the Keys, with lots of wildlife all around. And if you go out about 200 yards, you can snorkel, and it's still very shallow; my son could still walk comfortably in it. It was a great way to have an ocean vacation, except the ocean was like a giant wading pool :)

It depends a lot upon the ages of your children. When my kids were small, we went to places that had zoos and children's museums - they were entertained for hours. Plus if you have a zoo membership in your own town, it is sometimes reciprocal at other zoos. As our kids got older (they are 17 and 14 now), we did more places with amusement parks, water parks and of course, my favorite, Disney World. We have cruised a few times with the kids, but they got bored easily when we were on the boat. We did Washington DC in March and they really enjoyed that - almost all of the museums are free. Our favorite vacation for all of us was a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands (a once in a lifetime trip). The ship was docked during the daytime, so we explored a lot and saw a lot. Hope that helps!

What is this "vacation" that you speak of?
I haven't been anywhere in so long that my back deck (after the kids go to sleep) is about the only vacation I get -LOL!
I did just spend a weekend at Atlantic Beach, NC -CHILD FREE! (thanks mom& dad) and it was about the best place I've seen in a long time. It was so much like where I grew up in New Jersey that I would have to say it was my best 'vacation' ever since moving away from home. If my powerball ticket hits, I'm packing up the kids (oh yeah, and my husband) and moving there permanently. When the kids are older, we're saving for a trip to Samoa (my husband is Samoan and wants to go home) so I'm sure that will be my favorite spot in the future. (Who knows....maybe we'll just get 1 way tickets for that trip. I'm sure I could die happy under a palm tree in the south Pacific.)
