I'm reading a lot of the Baby Whisperer's (Tracy Hogg's) books and love her philosophy and techniques. I have discovered that I have done a bit of what she calls 'accidental parenting' - in other words, I have gotten my baby into habits that I didn't really mean to get her into and now it's hard to get her out of it. For example, my baby found it very hard to soothe herself to sleep (she is a chronic hair-ripper/ face-scratcher/ eye-rubber) and I tried a variety of methods to help soothe her, but in my exasperated state, I just gave her the boob on my bed where she would suckle herself to sleep. Of course, my baby now thinks that's FABULOUS but is getting too old for that, plus it's not safe - she needs her crib. So I have tried the pick up put down method. She does say that it's very very difficult and can sometimes take over an hour to settle your baby, but she says it works.
I tried it today for the first time without giving up...took about 50 minutes and then she didn't sleep very long after that. I feel horrible that she gets so stressed and cries so much, but, unlike the 'cry it out' or Ferber method, I am there with her and comforting her, but nevertheless, she cries and cries and cried...ugh. It's maddening.
I'm just curious if anyone else has tried this method and if so, was it successful? Please share your story!
