Why does my 16 year old son sleep so much?

He comes home from school and might play on his laptop for an hour but then he goes to sleep. He doesn't get up until 5 am the next day except for maybe dinner and to go to the bathroom. Other days he might stay up a bit late but I tell him to go to bed and he does.

Every other weekend he's allowed to spend the night at a friend's house where he sometimes stays up all night and doesn't go to sleep until morning.

Is that one night up every two weeks throwing his sleep schedule off? Is he doing drugs? Is he depressed?

He says he's just bored. I worry it's depression because we live with a friend right now and he doesn't have his own room. I've sectioned off a part of the living room to give his some privacy but it's still not much.

(He's had mono twice. Last time was about a year ago and the time before was probably about two or three years ago.)

I don't know what to think now. I went to bed around midnight last night and saw that he had woken up and was on his computer. I thought he'd go back to bed but when I went to wake him up at five this morning he was still up. I told him to get ready for school and he did.

I like the idea of him doing after school sports. He was going to do football again but he decided this year to skip it so he could focus on his grades.

We have a group in our town that is with the school district and are counselors that help out families. I think I will give them a call.

I know lots of teens who will sleep until noon if you let them! Is he going through a growth spurt? Sometimes that causes them to eat and sleep like crazy! He sounds pretty typical to me. Is there an after school sport or activity he can participate in to alleviate the boredom?
