K. Well here's what I did. I'll warn you up front that you will be in tears and a nervous nelly but it worked for me. set up a nighttime routine.eg. at the same time every night he has a bath, Bottle / breast, cuddle then tucked into bed. ok here's the hard bit. Big kiss then as you put your hand on him and say goodnight. Break eye contact and leave the room. Now you have to let him cry for 5 Mins before you go in. The key is not to make eye contact but to soothe with a tovoh and then leave again. We didn't make this up-it's called control crgiing and is something you can research on google. Find a method that works for you and go for it. No matter how much he cries he's not being harmed. But he needs to learn to live without you constantly there. Good luck.

He had a big play pen (like in the cartoons rugrats) and all his toys are in there, he has a walker and a big crib. He cries anytime he's in any of that stuff. I can't even take a shower with out him screaming his lungs out I have to put him in his high chair and take him to the bathroom with me. He won't stop screaming until I hold him

A friend of mine had a little girl with reflux that only appeared when she lay down. A doctor should be able to help diagnose it. If its nothing medical then just distract him with a toy and gradually move away from him little by little. He'll soon learn that not being held doesnt mean he's abandoned. It takes time and strength not to pick him up when he cries but we've all been there and it does work. You can look up control crying too as there are some great suggestions out there that worked for us.eg. a hand on them instead of a pick up along with soothing words worked for us and still works now that my girl is 9. Hope this heelps in some way.
