Why is my 9-year-old daughter crying so often for no reason?

We had her evaluated by a counselor who said it's hormones. I'm having trouble accepting that answer, although it may absolutely be the case. Anyone else have thoughts?

Nothing has changed. She's in a loving environment and overall an outgoing, great little girl. She will sit quietly and then I realize she's crying. I hold her and ask her what's going on and she says she doesn't know she's just sad. It lasts for a few minutes until I'm able to refocus her on something positive. Then it will happen again a bit later. I have read books with her about emotions at her age, etc. Maybe I should take her to the pediatrician for a check-up?
