Also if you give them cough medicine under the age of 2 they run the risk of getting pnemonia. They are too small to cough that junk up on their own and if you supress it, especially when they are laying down sleeping, it can settle in the lungs and become pnemonia.

I've been (at the ok of the Dr.) giving my daughter Benadryl (generic) since she was an infant, for runny nose or allergies. My aunt is a pharmacist so she gives me updated dosage info as my daughter grows. Cherry Vicks for Kids and Tylenol or Ibuprofen are helpful.

because ,medically, cough syrup has very few advantages and they do almost NOTHING to help ease the symptoms. They also carry the risk of accidental OVERDOSE due to it being VERY difficult to accurately measure the small amt. allowed in children under 2. Therefore, the RISK of overdose far outweighs the BENEFIT of NOTHING so it is not recommended in most children under 12 actually. the best thing you can do for a cough is to put a humidifier in your child's room and/or sit in a hot steamy bathroom so they can breathe the steam. Also warm liquids and even a few mins. in the cold night air wrapped in a blanket can help. you just have to wait it out. If the cough meds are helping your baby to sleep it is likely that you have already given too much. The proper dose should really do NOTHING for such young children. good luck i hope your baby is feeling better soon.

these sorts of medicines quite simply do not work on babies like they do adults and older children. Basically their system is under developed and won't have the same effect. Some mums have found vics vapour rub (for coughs) to be helpful when rubbed on the bottom of babies foot. :o) hope this helps.

@Brandi thanks for the info. I have four kids and after my2nd one those meds were pulled off the market. I was just curious.
@Theresa I do the same thing. I never reaally give my kids the "exact" dosing anyway. I've always given them less. So I do givemy 2yr old a small dose of cough med. Mostly its like 1/4 of the reg dosing and its only when they really need it. thanks again guys.

The reason they say not to is it's too easy to OD a small child on those kinds of meds. However I still do give my child cold meds to help them sleep at night. I give my 17 month old half the 2 year old dose. It seems to work and she's not being ODed. Vicks vapo rub for infants is great too and is safe for a baby 6 months and up.
