my 20 months old son, is cuddly , affectionate, super attached to me, makes great eye contact with me yet can easily ignores strangers, he babbles a lot, started to pretend play this week he stirs an empty pot and feed me from it , he checks in with me while playing, he sometimes come take me by hand just to sit with him in the room, if I go in a conversation with his daddy he looks at us back and forth looking amused, and lately he has been acting much better around other children. he also is speech delayed ( had fluid in ears that cleared up 2 months ago) he started saying mama after that, recently he say ka for come when he pulls my hand and he says dog and what . he only points with index finger to close objects and pictures in books, but he reaches when he wants sth and looks at me. he doesn't have major tantrums and sleeps and eats just fine. he spins anything he finds yet never fixates and is always aware of what happening around him while doing it and checks in with me and can be easily distracted if I interrupt it. he doesn't have routines and enjoys making a mess of all his toys. he claps when he wants never when asked and waves occasionally. his pediatrition isn't worried since he showed joint attention in out last visit, he was offering him a toy my son looked at it then to the doctor and then back at the toy. I am wondering if I should have him evaluated or is it too soon? thank you for any advice and sorry for my rambling :)

thank you so much, I went to have him evaluated and they told me they wont give him a diagnosis before he is 2 years old. they told me he might need occupational therapy and speech therapy but they don't think he is on the spectrum because he is connected to his environment and is socially appropriate with me and strangers. he will start therapy and hopefully that helps him. thank you again :)

The delay in expressive language isn't profound, and can be explained by the fluid in your son's ears. The lack of clapping and waving isn't a complete lack - he just won't clap on cue, and doesn't wave as much as you'd like to see. The only thing is the love of spinning objects... and although that is noteworthy, lots of kids like to spin things. Spinning toys have been around since ancient times because it's challenging to get an object spinning and it's visually stimulating to watch it. I wouldn't be inclined to worry since it sounds like he just like it, not that he's doing it to the exclusion of other things.

All that said, sometimes it's worth it to get an evaluation done just to put your mind at ease. If they find anything he gets treatment early, and if they don't find anything you get to hear good news.

I think the spinning, speech delay and the fact that he doesn't clap or wave when asked (only when he wants to ) made me worry. every autism red flags check lists include these symptoms. I thought maybe its language delay but wondered if any mommy have a different opinion. you can imagine how worried we can get !!

Everything I see in your post suggests that he's fine. The only delay is expressive language, and you have an explanation for that. Why do you want him evaluated for autism?
