I'm blessed to have a son with Asperger's who is living independently in NYC. He has an apartment with 2 roommates and he has a great job that he loves. He is a college graduate and is paying his student loans, bills and has his own car. But he has never had a girlfriend or close friends that he socializes with. His life revolves around his job.
Now he tells me that work is slow but he's ok financially because he has saved money for times like this. But I worry what does he do to keep himself occupied? I know he doesn't drink or take drugs so that doesn't worry me. But I still worry about depression. I have had serious problems with depression all my life and I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in my late 40's. My psychiatrist has warned me to be on the lookout for symptoms in my son. But how can I do anything about it when he's at an age where it's all about being independent on mom and dad?
