Worried Mom

My 15 month old just went to the doctor for his well visit. His growth & development as usual are great. But at this visit the doctor said my son has a heart murmur. (me, my husband, my mom, & my husband's mom all have benign murmurs). My son is schedualed to get an echocardiogram done next month just to make sure it's benign (which the doctor said he thinks it is). My son is healthy, occassionally has struggled with breathing issues (mainly when he was 6-10 months)...we think it was allergies. Now he has no issues, and is a healthy toddler. He's 30 pounds & 33 inches tall...so no problems with growth. And according to his developmental charts he can do all the milestone things for 12-24 month olds except drink from a cup w/o a lid w/o spilling much. (he prefers to just dump...much more fun). So my question is should I be worried? Or is his murmur like I'm thinking & the doctor is too, just a like mine no big deal... Is there signs he'd have a heart problem? What are they? Advice would be awesome.

oh my goodness, try not to worry. my son also has a heart murmur and the cardiologist said that my sons is the most textbook, normal heart murmur he's ever heard. he said that because it is totally benign, that there is nothing my son cannot do when it comes to sports, etc. he also said that if anyone ever asks if he has any medical conditions, i do not need to mention his murmur because its a totally normal thing. now, the same cannot be said for your son until he is checked out, i just wanted to reassure you that a normal heart murmur is nothing to be concerned about, and is not even considered a medical condition :)

good luck, and do your best not to worry right now!

Been there done that. Everyone in my family has hear murmurs except DH - they are all begnin like yours. I won't tell you not to worry, because you're going to do that anyway. Until he gets a diagnosis don't jump to conclusions. Stay off any website about this because you will only hear the worst case scenerio. He's probably fine and probably just inherited a bengin murmur. Good luck! Please keep us posted.

I don't see how worring will help the situation :) Do the test and see what you are dealing with.
Look into ways to build up his strength - I mean in terms of diet, so he doesn't have to deal with more then this issue. \Odds are, he's just one of the family.

I think you're just being a mom, you're naturally concerned. We just found out today the baby I'm pregnant with now has a pelvic kidney (one of the kidneys didn't ascend). I know it's probably nothing but just the simple fact that something COULD go wrong, as a mom, it makes you sweat a little bit. It's probably going to be nothing, just try and stay calm until the ultrasound. I hope it works out for the best!!!!
