After I gave birth in Ecuador and after a abdominal wall surgery also in Ecuador, I wrapped in bands made of sheets ripped to about 6-9 inches wide. You wrap firmly in this. It is easier with help getting it wrapped. It did not hurt and provided support. There may not be any medical advantage, but there seems to be any real disadvantage as long as you do not make it so tight you can't breathe (like a old time corset). It is a comfort thing and I liked it.

Yes. It is fine. I know what they are speaking of. They don't practice this much here in the states, but in Mexico they do this for their moms. I had a C Section. We all get all stretched out and the insision is very tender. We need support in the area. This lets us know hey, we have some limitations and we really work at NOT being super mom. You ladies out there know what I am talking about. Wrapping if you dont have a C section still give you support. You don't have to wear to sleep. I recommend when you are out and about. Let your tummy rest at night. It doesn't have to be tight. Just enough so that your back doesn't feel stressed. Having a baby is hard work. When you wrap yourself its with a large Ace Bandage. You can get these at a medical supply store. Or you can go to the Sports Store and my the velcro neoprene waist wrap. They are about $15 bucks. Get the one one size fits all. I actually wore a corset type set of underwear for a few weeks. (the bottoms where attached) My mom who is Peruvian actually told me to wear it so my muscles could be supported. It helped a lot since they aren't as tight and strong as they used to be. It was also for visual purposes. It was nice to see a flat belly as opposed to a puffy one. :)

the only wrapping up i heard of is the medical belt after a C-section to keep your muscles in place and let them heal. however, some women choose to wear it for the first few weeks if the child is big and if they weren't very active during pregnancy -- abdominal muscles aren't strong enough to support lifting, so to prevent back injuries, they'll wear it for a few weeks after birth.
however, if you want to do it for cosmetic reasons, mild abdominal exercises and breastfeeding are much more effective to help your uterus contract and for your ab muscles to go back to normal. by gentle i mean -- oblique stretches, yoga, or sitting on the couch/chair, and alternating lifting your legs towards elbows , keep knees slightly bent. oh and swimming works great too -- for the whole body to tone up. good luck!

I haven't tried it, but based on how I felt after I gave birth to my son it's definitely something I'd be open to. It felt like my rib cage had collapsed and my internal organs were going to fall out of my abdomen. I'd think that support would have felt good!

I heard about this quite a bit. It's more in the mexican heritage being as my husband's 1/2 mexican and 1/2 spanish and his family is HUGE on it. Its supposed to help your muscles contract better but when I talked to my dr about it he said there is no medical need and that it's not that big of a deal if you do it or not. If anything it may make you more uncomfortable but your body will take the same amount of time to go back to normal with or without a brace/boustierre (sp?)
