11 months old and still not feeding himself finger foods.

[deleted account] ( 4 moms have responded )

My son will be a year old in a couple weeks and he still will not feed himself. He'll pick up the food and then just mash it in his hand or throw it on the ground. He's also not interested at all in a sippy cup (even if I hold it for him). My daughter was doing all of this by 11 months. Any suggestions on how I can help him with this??

have you tried taking his hand with a piece of something in it and help him put it in his mouth? as for the sippy cup they have one that has the top like a bottle see it that works we did that and slowly worked it into the regular sippy cup..you can also let him put bites in your mouth make a game out of of it.. good luck to you Jen

My son didn't start feeding himself (picking up cherioos or puffs) until his first birthday, exactly. He did the sippy cup shortly after. I've heard, and read many things about how boys are a little slower than girls. My son was a little slow walking too, but he finally did it. Hang in there, you can encourage him obviously..do it yourself in from of him, but as you know, all children progress at their own rate...Good luck to you and your family...:)

I had issues trying to get my lil one to take a sippy also. He never took a bottle though. But he likes water a lot, and when he saw that I put water in the cup, he let me squirt it into his mouth (we use a soft spout sippy) and from then on, he would take a drink from it, but since he had no practice holding it, he would need help, but with practice he started drinking on his own and now that's what he does. And he was about 11 months when he started taking it. As for the finger foods, mine was eating finger foods since he was about 7 months, but maybe if you put a piece of soft food, such as banana, in his hand, and guide it to his mouth, or mimic with a piece of your own, he will understand a bit better? Monkey see, monkey do at this age. My son is 14 months old now and he's very independent so definitely try it =) Hope this helps!

Maybe if you try to make it fun to him, like the sippy cup can be an airplane. Or maybe if he sees you eating finger foods, he may want to do it too
