15 month old not walking

So my daughter will be 15 months at the end of this month and she's not walking....she will walk with assistance and will pull up to her knees, but she's not cruising or trying to walk on her own. However I do see progress every month. Should I be worried that my 15 month old is not walking? Anyone else have a child not walking by 15 months and nothing was wrong? I guess I just need some encouragement that she's just moving at her own pace and will walk one day. Thanks!

My daughter was a late bloomer too. I started to get worried too and then as soon as I scheduled an appointment for her, she started walking. Every child is different, but if you are concerned, it does not hurt to talk with your doctor.

I also had a girlfriend who said that her daughter would not walk and was always being carried. One day when no one was in the room, she got up and walked. Apparently, she liked being carried and did not try to walk. :-)

My 2 year old daughter didn't walk until she was 16 months old. She would walk around the room on her knees and was cruising before then but did not walk on her feet without holding on until 16 months. I signed up for a "My Gym" class so she could be around other kids her age that were walking and gave her a ton of encouragement and those two things seemed to help... but really, she just needed to decide that she wanted to do it! I had asked her doctor about it at her 15 month appointment and he said they don't get concerned about not walking until age 2.

It is good that you are seeing progress every month and I think you are right, she is just moving at her own pace and will probably be walking soon!

Well, my son, who is now 18, did not walk till he was around 18 months. I didn't either!!!! So, she will walk in her own time. I am sure you have had her checked out by her pediatrician, so, don't worry. Good luck. I remember people commenting on it but his doctor told us not to worry. That 18 month old is now a 6' 8" young man and walking just fine!!!!!

I wouldnt worry!!! Did you use a walker with her? I found that walkers make them use their toes instead of a flat foot to move around so they have to relearn to walk once they are out of it....she will do it eventually i think....She just sounds relaxed to me!!!!

Is she developing in other areas. i.e. is she speaking in one or two word units? Find guidelines of what she should be doing on the internet, check with the American Speech Hearing and Language Assoc. Do check with your Pediatrician if you are concerned.

1st, have you talked to your pediatrician about your concerns? my cousins son is 22 months and just starting to walk... he is huge (not fat, just very tall & solid) as long as she is crawling and not seeming like her muscles are atrophying, I wouldn't be concerned...

My son didn't walk until 16 months!! I was so freaked out b/c my daughter started at 12 - what the heck was his problem??!! Well - it was laziness. He could get to where he was going by crawling so really saw no need to stand up! :-) She'll get it - just in her own time. (i hated when people said that to me)

Don't be worried because eveyone walks when they are ready. I have a son who is about the same age he did not start walking by him self until 17 months. Of course we kind of sped up the process. We gave him a walk 'n ride toy from Playschool for chirstmas and now he is walking by him self. let her do it at her own pace but get that toy she will love it. most likely she will hang on to it and just start laughing or crying. all now she needs a confdence bost and the toy will help with that.

my daughter is very cautious still at age 7 and didn't walk until 16 months but it required a lot of encouragement.
I also used to work in a daycare center with children age 1 1/2 to 2 years. There was a little boy who would shuffle around on his knees and would walk with assistance but never on his own. The doc said that his ankles were weak and we had to encourage him to walk to strengthen them. He was walking independently within a couple of months after that. With no issues.

Believe it or not all 3 of my children waited until after 15 months to walk. They just weren't ready to walk, but when they did they wouldn't stop. Once they realized they can get around on their own...they would run circles around me. So enjoy the control you have right now, cause before long...she'll not only be walking, she'll be running. Enjoy every minute!

hello,... my son will turn 16 months this 26 and he is still not walking by himself... maybe your baby is a bit skinny like my son??? small boned like his father i guess... but he is quite active,... i think he doesn't have enough confidence to walk by him self, my husband lets matthew play with a chair with wheels (like those in offices). Matthews walks around the house pushing the chair so he walks by him self but with the support of the chair, looks more effective than using a walker. and he finds it fun to do!

My son who is 33 years old didn't walk till he was almost 15 months like your daaughterhe did with assistance. He is a grown man and has an IQ of 152. Very ADD not hyper. He loved to daydream and think ways to do things out of the ordinary. He is a certified organic farmer. He plays several muscical instruments and works in a recording studio. You daughter is fine. How much does she weigh?...you may want to have her blood sugar checked. It may be low.

I had early walkers but from what I read from other posts this age is not unusual. Each child is individual and progresses in their own time. You can purchase a book called "what to expect the toddler years" this will give you a lot of times frames but all these books will tell you what bubs should be doing or what they may possibly be doing. I found this very helpful as a new mum when all I wanted to see was my baby progressing. But by the 3rd I didnt want to see these next steps happening so fast cause it meant my babies were growing tooooo quickly.

My daughter didn't walk until she was 18 months old. The docs will tell you not to worry until they're 18 months old and haven't taken a single step yet. Watch her closely - girls have a tendency to develop motor functions more slowly than boys. My son was walking at 9 months old! But my daughter was more than happy to just sit and work out her puzzle toys, stack blocks, etc., and really didn't have much of an interest in walking around. Also, she had daddy who would carry her everywhere she wanted to go!
You can encourage movement and "cruising" by doing things like putting her favorite toy in reach only if she's standing. If you're still concerned, contact your state's Early Intervention program. You have the right to a free evaluation of your child. They'll put your child through a battery of developmental tests - things like can she stack 5 blocks? Can she discern red from blue? Can she pull herself up? Can she speak in an age-appropriate manner? and so on. They'll give you a TON of reading material, tell you what's considered age-appropriate development, and then chart their results against the average so you can see exactly how your daughter's development is proceeding. At the very least, it will give you a good reference to decide if your daughter needs physical therapy to "catch up" on her development - but a non-walking 15 month old is absolutely nothing to worry about. Good luck!

Hi Firstly, what a gorgeous little girl! I notice that someone said earlier that the average for walking is 15 months but I believe it is 13 from the reading I have done. There may not be the need to worry as a lot of people have said - each child is different and may walk earlier or later. I would say that 15 months is a little late though and it is just worth a check up with your child health nurse or GP to ensure that bubs doesn't have hips dysplasia(where the hips are not properly in the sockets) or any other physical reason that she is not walking yet. A physio may also be able to help. Good luck! K!

Both of my kids were between 15 & 18 months old when they finally let go and walked on their own! It's was hard not to worry, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with either of them. They just did it in their own time. Now they're ages 3 & 6 and you would never know that they walked late! As long as your daughter is progressing, I wouldn't worry too much.

If she continues to show development she should be fine, and most babies walk when ready. However, with my first son, I had the experience where he was crawling from 6 months and cruising the furniture by 9 months, but by 17 months still could not stand without holding something or walk by himself. I had a nagging feeling something was wrong but everyone told me 'don't worry he'll walk when he is ready'. Finally a gymbaroo instructor told me she thought something was wrong with his balance and to get it checked out by a paediatric chiropractor. Sure enough his neck was out of alignment. Within a few days of his first chiro visit he was walking. It is my biggest regret as a mother not to follow my intuition on this and get it checked out earlier. Other things tied into it, like that he was waking multiple times a night and breastfeeding around the clock (trying to self medicate - poor thing). My 2nd child is now 12 months and has also been cruising the furniture since 9 months. Even though there is no sign anything is wrong I will get her checked by paediatric chiropractor soon just for peace of mind, and I won't feel fully relaxed until she does walk. So follow your gut if you really feel something is wrong and get it checked out, but if you feel all is developing normally just chill and enjoy the moment.

Don't fret! I had a son that did not walk until he was 19 months old. In fact I had to trick him into walking while holding onto a hose watering the garden. He grew up to be a Financial Analysis. All kids develop at different rates.

you've reassured yourself and i'll back you up that she is moving at her own pace... my children walked between 12 and 13 months but my daughter wasn't even pulling herself up until 11 months and then it just happened... i am a daycare teacher for under twos, and see many children develop at completely different paces... two children weren't even walking till they were 23months, and had a fear of putting weight on their feet... but they got there... currently i've observed that children are more happy to spend time cruising on the floor and developing their co-ordination and balance... keep observing your child and one day soon she will just do it... patience is a virtue... hang in there...

My daughter grew so fast as I and my husband were over 6' tall. The pediatrician told me not to expect her to do anything motor wise like all the other kids. She didn't walk til she was 16 months. My grandson is doing the same thing, her son. he is 15 months now and will cruise, has never crawled, dr did xray of his hips he is fine. I tried to tell her that but of course they have to cover their butts too.

My Daughter bummped her head on our coffee table 3 times in 1 wk on my husbands watch and I decided to put the table in the garage. Right after I did that she started to walk!! It was like a miracle to me. I guess she didnt feel like she had enough open space. She was probably afraid she was gonna hit her head on that darn table!! Wouldnt it be awesome if all you had to do was move a table?? Good Luck!!

I had 3 children that all walked before they were a year and my 4th child didn't walk independently or talk with consistency until she was 21 months. When I asked her Doctor about it, she was not concerned. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, but this child has a higher overall perception of life and is extremely intellegent and more responsible at her age (she's now 12) than the other children were. As long as your child is making improvement, personally I wouldn't be too concerned. However, talking with your Pediatrician is always the best course of action if you have any concerns.

No worries! My daughter didn't walk until 15.5 months, and then she was off like a shot. She never crawled either, just sort of scooted along on her bottom. I was reassured many times that babies/kids will do things in their own time and their own way. It doesn't always stop me from worrying either (normal moms are always worried a bit, I think), but every time I get really worried, she'll have a big developmental jump within a couple of weeks. It's like she just waits and then says in her own way, "See, mommy, I did it when I was ready!" Perhaps your daughter is working on some other big development and just hasn't gotten around to walking yet. If you're really concerned, see the doctor, of course, but it sounds like she's just taking her time.

I am a 53 yr. old, mother of 4, grandmother of 3(soon to be 4), & I have learned a long time ago, that none of my children/grandchildren are the same. If everything is put within his/her reach, or if they are picked up/carried most of the time, there is never a NEED to walk. I learned that if you just let them get a little frustrated, they will soon find a way to reach their goal; get from point a to point b. When my 3rd child was 12 months, she started taking 'tentative' steps. Her older brother & sister went on vacation with their grandparents for a wk. When they returned, BIG SURPRISE!!, their little sister was almost running. Hind sight, it was probably due to the fact that no one was there to pick her up or hand her everything that caught her eye.
My advice?? Don't ignore OBVIOUS problems, but, unless your doctor tell you something different, just give her time. The day will probably come when you are saying,"And to think, I was glad when you learned how to walk!"

My son just started walking on his own at 17.5 months. He just woke up one day and did it. Get her some good walking shoes so she feel confident and is not afraid of falling. That seemed to help our son. Once he got his confidence he walked fine. By the way "normal range" is 9-18 months. So don't worry about your 15 month old not walking.

We had went back to my grandmothers house and she was sitting on the floor and looked up at me and pulled herself up to standing position and took off walking down the hall like she had been doing it forever. Just be patient. She will walk when she is ready. We have 3 girls and they all walked at different ages. Hope that helps put your mind at ease since your 15 month old is not walking yet.
