my 16 month old son...doesn't say any words yet. He's says momma..but that's it. I've always heard that they should be saying momma plus another word by now..and its starting to worry me. Any advice on how to get him to start talking...and is it normal??

my son is 21 mths and didn't start babbling until about 2 mths ago, for me it was weird because my daughter was saying 3 or 4 word sentences at about 18 mths, if your concerned talk to your doc, unless there are speech problems he will start when he needs too...the only word i can understand from my son are mum, dad

Talk a lot to your son, read books every day, and sing songs with him. It may also help to be around other children who talk. If he can't say new words by age 2 then I would express my concerns to his doctor. My son knew less than five words when he turned two and the pediatrician didn't seem concerned. Boys tend to develop more slowly when it comes to language. My son didn't really start talking until 2 1/2. That's when he started saying new words every day.

Im not sure if its normal, if your concerned talk to a dr. My son is 12 months and he started talking about 10 months. I had him start talking by saying one word at a time around him.... like if your playing or in a car on the way to the store, repeatedly say momma, momma, momma. My son says momma or mom and daeee ( daddy). We are working on hi now. It could take a while to pick it up for them but they do eventually, just keep practicing :) and read to them 15 minutes a day (if they sit still lol) that helps alot too!

I don't know if in general it is normal but for my son it was. He didn't start speaking until he was 2yrs old. Now he just talks up a storm. Just make sure he doesn't have any problems with his hearing. If not just keep talking to him and reading him books.

I don't know how significant it is but according to my Mom I didn't say any words (not even Mama) until I was 17months and then I did duck, Dad, and Dawn in short sucession.

My daughter didn't say anything but a few words till she was almost three and then just began speaking in sentences one day. I was worried about her because all the daycare kids around her were talking a lot. I wouldn't worry about it unless she becomes really delayed. Talk to your dr if you have any other concerns about her development, but he'll probably tell you it's normal. Good Luck. Oh, and my daughter is 4 1/2 now and she talks so much it makes my head hurt, so enjoy the quiet time now!
