The milk you feed your baby the first year is for long term. Ask your Dr. and keep trying different products. Even goats milk. Most grocery stores carry it. Don't give up.

My youngest daughter had a milk allergey or protien problem. I tried alot of things but not all of them.My mom told me carrot juice had plenty of calcium for her. So we bought a Juicer and made carrot and apple juice mix. She loved it. And the next seven months that is what she had. Big mistake. Now she is 25, over 10,000 dollars worth of dental work in her mouth and her teeth are still rotting and it's because I gave up. Get your babies DRs. help and try every product. This is important.

Ok, Gemma...... since this is obviously not a topic in which you were actually looking for advice, we'll just shut it down. You &Mel are in each others circle, so it's easily discussed on your walls.
Please don't use this forum as a place to play games. There are people that come here to actually try to help other members, and quite frankly, no one appreciates being played.

This is the point at which I am going to ask, Gemma, have you talked to your daughter's doctor about her feeding regime? Or the local community nurse?

It sounds like he isn't getting proper nutrition and his body is craving something else.

Maybe the formula isn't being mixed properly and it thusly lacking in nutrients and so he craves other things.

In the meantime you're feeding him empty calories and making him larger than he supposed to and you think its a good thing just because he's putting on weight?

oh yeah Jenn no one is saying that formula isn better for them of course, and yeah for a normal bub its always better to offer formula first providing they dont have reflux or FTT or anything

hey I have a friend who went through IVF to have her son and he was the same. He would not drink the milk and only the food since he was about 2 months old. They just couldnt get him to drink it they did all sorts of tests even barium swallows which is what Bri had. She had to wake him 2 hrly but it took her so long to feed him and he would have very little. So he managed on baby food and he was a big with that. At the shops at 2-3 months he would eat the whole jar =) other mums in the baby rooms were amazed lol

Well, unless you have some kind of magic baby food, it doesn't have the same nutritional value as formula. Best to offer formula first and then a few spoonfuls of food. Baby food in the first stage is only meant to be supplemental to the nutritional value of the formula.
If it's that hard to believe, simply compare the ingredients. You'll find that formula has much more for the developmental needs of your child. Baby food is great for practice, and god knows it's a lot cheaper than formula, but he needs the nutrients in formula first at this young age.

Actually 3 meals a day plus bottles is not at all too much. Brianna had heaps of bottles a day plus food before all meals. Please Jodi just because you have a different opinion dont lecture her she is a great mother and does a great job with her kids. Oh and another thing I have a phamphet on just in case you wanted to know Gemma that I got from hospital they need solids after 6 months for growth and development along with the milk. And he is 4 months plus they have 4 month baby food. If hes hungry keep feeding him. I wish you all the best girl

yeah some kids just need it lol. I guess he loves his food. He is older the Bri was when she started. Its good though Bri was a terrible eater even when she was given food before milk. Her ped said he reckons our new bbay will be a chubba and eating full on at 3 months lol. Thanks too, I wouldnt give you any wrong info =)

Gemma, 4 months is way too young for your little one to be eating 3 meals a day plus the bottles he needs. At this age, his formula (I assume it is formula) is most important to his growth and development. Food is only for experimenting. Reallt, they do not need ANY solids until at least 6 months (although I am one who believe introducing some small amounts at 4 months is ok), and until at least 12 months, breastmilk or formula is their primary form of nutrition. So at this stage (17 weeks) I think you are going overboard on the solids. Great, he is experimenting, but leave it at the experimental stage for now.

Oh yeah, books are stupid. By no means get an education - its stupid too.... all those doctors are just lying out their butts about what is best for children to make your life more difficult on purpose.

Mel, you need to STOP giving advice about your early feeding experiences with Bri. You KNOW you had issues with her, and your experiences with her are NOT the norm. Your advice is NOT HELPING OTHER PEOPLE UNESS THEY ARE GOING THROUGH THE SAME YOU WERE WITH BRI.

I would have waited til bri was 5 months but now I know better and I always give people on here the smae advise I got. they try and tell me it was for bri specific and not for others but I know what they said and this is speechys and dieticians from the chldrens hospital in my state. They said kids are fine on solids you just look out incase of reactions but its so unlikely. so yeah keep up the good work x

Hey i agree with some of the latter comments, formula or breast milk should still be the main source of food up to 6 months min- so offer milk first then food second - if he is intolerant to milk you can get some good formulas to help cope with this - i have heard of goats milk formula which is great for this - but you know best your mum X

My babies are all grown with children of their own but I would definitely check with the doctor. 17 week old babies need formula for all the nutrients. I'm not sure you will get that from the baby food. I am not a formula only person but I think everything in moderation. From experience I have learned if a Mother feels something is not quite right they should go with their instincts until they are ok with the professionals answers. This is probably nothing but the professionals will help you determine that and set your mind as ease.

Breast milk or formula should be the primary source of nutrition within the first year. Your son needs the nutrients in the formula (I assume that's what he's getting?). Solids do not contain all the nutrients that he requires at this age. I would say cut back on the solids. It's a little early for solids anyways, but if you insist on giving them to him, keep it to a minimum. Always offer the bottle before a meal of solids as well. There's a saying that goes, "food for fun until they're one". I think you should keep that in mind.

Michelle - posted on 01/26/2010

I'd cut the solids back and increase the formula. Solids aren't balanced enough at his age to be the primary nutrition source.

maybe he is lactose interorant. Also all babies are different as long as he is at the weight he should be he is fine is what i was told by my sons dr. be he was in 8oz bottles before he was 2 weeks old

I am a mother of three very picky eaters. They are now 2, 4 and 6 years old - and all of them gave me a challenge when it came to eating. Believe me, I feel your pain. I have spent countless hours worrying over why they won't eat or if they are getting enough food?

I can tell you that you cannot force them to eat no matter how much you try. They will eat when they are hungry. If he is growing at normal rate - then you shouldn't have too much to worry about.

My son, at six years old, is now in full blown "growing boy" mode. I can't give him enough food - he is always eating.

Just hang in there - if the growth rate is normal - then don't sweat it.

If he is a sicky babie he could have ether a weak band at the top of his stomach giving him reflux or he could have a milk intolerance. A fingerprick blood gtest can check for this but 17 weeks is far to early to be giving him babyfood. That stays in his tummy longer is harder to digest and therefore he won't drink enough milk. You are risking incresing his chances of food allergy and he can get constipated. But at the end of the day if he's settled and growing well hes probably fine and there are no absolutes every baby is different.

hey I dont think it matters I kno bri's older but she doesnt drink milk either she hates it, and as long as he's gaining weight he;s ok. When bri was born she had 5 bottles if that and they told m she had to have a minimum of 6 but eventually the child nurse gave up and said well if thats all shes going to have then you cant make her. I wouldnt wory about it

They recommend you bottle feed on demand now dont they? If he doesnt want any more than that and hes eating solids well then hes fine. Are you giving him juice or water? Maybe if hes filling up on other drinks thats why he doesnt want milk. I wouldnt worry too much though, if your worried about the calcium intake give him yoghurts or fromage frais as one of his meals.

my son was very similar, from when he was tiny til a couple of months ago, he had a very wheezy phlegmy chest, but grew out of it with time. he also only used to 2-3 bottles during the day when he started havin baby food. so long as your baby is gettin a reasonable amount of milk i dont see a problem. :)

Honestly, I don't think I would worry too much about it. As long as he is getting some milk and is healthy. If you are really concerned, maybe talk to his pediatrician more about him not wanting to drink it. I also, would not force my child to eat or drink anything if they did not want it. My kids are picky and don't like most of what I fix, nor do they seem to eat enough for me, but they are healthy.
