19 pounds out of carseat need help

graco safeseat rear faces up to 32 lbs and the graco snugride 35 goes up to 35 lbs.. i tell everyone who has a new baby on the way to buy a graco travel system either the safeseat or snug 35.. otherwise you get caught in a pickle and have to buy more car seats than necessary.. most states laws are rear facing until 1 year old and 30 lbs.

I am a child passenger safety technician and do car seat inspections....it is best to get a convertible seat that will go rear facing and then later turn around to forward facing. It is MUCH safer for a child to remain rear facing as long as possible. Even with very good muscle control in the neck, an infants head is very large and heavy and it would be impossible for any infant to control their own head in a crash. Many parents look at their child rear facing and think they look so uncomfortable, but really it is not as uncomfortable as it looks...and being a little uncomfortable is worth it to be safe! There are many convertible seats on the market, you need to see which one will meet your needs - fit well in your vehicle, fit your child, fit your budget. It is highly recommended to stay rear facing as long as possible because the back of the seat will absorb the impact in the event of a crash. When a child is forward facing, only the points where the harness is touching the child will absorb the impact in a crash. This can make a big difference in the kind/severity of injuries a child will have because of a crash. Even crashes at 30 mph can cause severe injuries. Hope this helps!

Check with your local police our fire dept, but when we had ours fitted the first time the firefighter mentioned that a lot of parents do the wrong thing by keeping the kids in a seat that does not fit. He said they should be moved to a regular car seat once there is only 1 inch above their heads. Still rear facing, but a "big kid" car seat because in case of an accident it is safer!

My daughter was always big for her age and I had this problem, I was told that in a crash it was better for her to have broken legs than a broken neck! I got a larger seat that went backwards facing and forwards, her legs were still a bit cramped but as she was too heavy for the baby seat it was far better.

I have already gotten his new carseat awhile ago as i had told the other moms already ik asked his docs they said what i bought was good if i could figure out how to delete this post i would as problem has been solved

No. The law states that a child under the age of 1 must remain in a infant seat rear facing. Have u tried getting a carseat with a 5pt harness attachments that is 4 rear or forward facing and can later be turned around to forward facing once he has reached the proper age requirements?

get a convertible carseat. my son is only 7 months and he is in one but still backwards facing. hes about 19lbs. i def would not reccommend puttin him in a booster until hes 3. the convertible seat acts as an infant, baby, toddler seat. once hes 1 and weighs the apporiate weight to be facing forward then he can face front. this is my 2nd child as well and i didnt have to worry about changin seats for my dd as early as my ds. good luck

No laws have been changed to 2 yet June they are in the process of trying to make it so but as of yet it has not be implemented.

New law says to age 2 in rear facing seat. On the other hand keeping your child in a seat that's too small is worse than facing him forward. Just make sure you get a full back booster that supports his whole body. One with the racing harness (5-point) should work for a long time

No, no, no!! The law is 1 AND 20. I purchased a convertible carseat that rear faces up to 35lbs for my daughter. The law will eventually be 2 or 35lbs. I ERF my daughter until she was 2 and my son will be able to use his infant carrier up to 35lbs. Does he just look way to long or does his head actually come above the top of the shell? Please think about this before you forward face him so young.

he needs to be in one that can be rearfacing until he is 12 months. they have plenty that can be used rear/forward and can also be used as a booster.

Again my daughter will be 2 in a month. She is still rear facing. Her seat will rear face up to 40 pounds. She is quite happy to face her brothers and play with them.

I have a friend that had a child that was very sick her first year. Due to all her illnesess she was 18 months before she was 20 pounds. She was average height but very underweight. The doctors kept insisting she wait until she was 20 lbs before she turned her around forward facing but rather switch to a convertable seat that is both forward facing and rear facing. The convertable seats are generally bigger so they help with the longer length of the child. Regardless of the seat you use, it is generally recommended that the child stay rear facing until 20 lbs and one year. There are many different sizes of seats to accommodate longer babies.

You can outgrow an infant car seat height requirement, ours was 29". BUT that does not mean you have outgrown a rear-facing seat! The Britax seat we have rear-facing has a height limit of 49" rear or forward facing.

not only is there age and weight requirements, but there should be height requirements as well on your sons carseat. my daughter outgrew her backward facing carseat at 6 months at 20 lbs

Buy a rear to forward facing seat 10 months is too young to be forward facing and my son is 10 months 20 lbs and 30inches long. We just got a seat that goes to 33lbs rear facing and 40 forward facing. It is super dangerous to put them in one they are not ready for yet.

No, I had the same problem with my daughter. I bought one that was a backwards and fowards facing that turned into a booster. They are more expensive but last forever. He can stay backwards until he reaches a year. Thats what my kids doc. told me. I found one that was from 20 lbs. It took me a while to find it but i did. Great investment!

No child is too long to face the rear of the car before they're ready to turn around! You can't possibly determine on your own if your child has the neck strength to face forward anyway. They really don't before 3 years. It's OK if their feet touch the seat. I have a 20 lb. almost 29" long 7 month old and he won't face forward until he's two. I care too much about him, and won't risk his life like that.

Look at the link I posted Melissa a lot of those rear facing kids are almost 5yrs old. No one has died from a broken leg but there are more cases than I can count where they have died from internal decapitation. It will be a law very soon and now even my pediatrician is giving pamphlets and strongly urging parents to leave them rear facing till three but not to turn them at all till at least 2. Most car seats now can be rear facing till 35lbs.

if there is case of an accident, it is proven that it is very unlikely that it could break leg bones. but wouldn't you rather have them have a broken leg than a snapped neck?

i would think if they do the rear facing until 2 or 3 it would be an issue with possible broken bones in an accident if a child has to sit rear facing. My son is tall and it would definately have make car trips something i would not have done if he was rear facing. he has been the size of a 6 or 7 year old the past year and he is turning 5 next week. Fire stations in Ohio where i used to live would help you set up your car seats, however police officers would be another area you can go and talk to about car seats, and possibly have them check it, and/or install it-especially if it's for safety first and then prevention of serious accident complications or tickets!!!

It is always safer to have a child rear facing it would be safer if we could rear face in the car. My son is 2 and still rear facing with no plans to turn him. He is in a Safety First Complete Air and is 28lbs and 34in.

you can put him in a convertible car seat/"big kid" car seat, but MAKE SURE it can be put backwards-facing. it is extremely unsafe to put a baby front facing until they're at least 2. you can get a big car seat, but just make sure you put it backwards :)

Many people already do and many are rear facing till 3. They bend their legs not really an issue. check out the link I included it shows pictures of children extended rear facing.

He was too old?? Shortly you are going to see the new law rear facing till 2 yrs old? and the recommendation is rear facing till 3 yrs old. They are fighting to get the rear facing till 2yrs old passed as we speak.

I had almost the same issue with length and weight with my first. But I kept her in the rear facing one until she was just over a year old. But then we ended up using the booster early again because of height. I'd definitely say to go ask law enforcement first.

I think a larger carset with the harness is the way to go . You can always ask law enforcement what they think and they may help you install it. booster seat is to easy for them to slip under the belt and the shoulder harness is to high up under the neck.

you should use ones that will sit rear facing, by law. They make car seats so they will fit your child and into your car that look almost like a chair. They say 20 lbs and 1 year because of the strength of a childs muscles in case of an accident. Children under a year are not as strong as older children and don't have the reflexes to sit when it's forward facing. Consider the seat and the way your car is set up too. I know someone who moved her baby car seats at 8 months old, it's rear facing in her car!

Both of my kids were at the top of the charts and they remained rear facing until they were a year old. There are rear facing car seats that go to 30 or 35 pounds. They were also in the center of the rear seat. It was a little bit of a pain, but their safety was my top priority. Just saw you found a rear facing seat that works. Good for you!!

Susan there are many seats that rear face up to 40 pounds. There is no rule or law about the child's feet touching the back of the seat rear facing.

I got my Graco MyRide 65 for a steal. It was on sale on line at Walmart a few months ago. I love the seat and my daughter is happy in it.

Buy a convertible seat. He still need to be rear facing. They are changing the 12 months 22 pounds minimum. There are several car seats that are great. We have the Graco MyRide 65. It is rear facing up to 40 pounds. My daughter will be 2 in a month and is still rear facing. She only weighs 23 pounds and 32 inches tall. There is no length limit for rear facing as long as the child's head is below the top of the seat. The child's legs will not break if their feet are touching the back of the seat. There have been no reported cases of broken legs from a rear facing child. There are lots of broken necks from forward facing accidents. He still need a 5 point hrness, not belt positioning booster, and he still needs to be rear facing. In the US children have to be rear facing until AT LEAST 20lbs AND 1 year. Car seats should have a weight AND a height requirment on them.

I have the safety first 3 in 1 and it is great it goes from birth until you want to put them in a booster. And you can leave them rear facing much longer. I know how you feel. My kids were so tall that the doctor took a look at him in his carrier and told me I need to get a new one because his head was over the top. Good luck to you.

If the child is cramped the only way you can go is front facing. Trust your judgment and do what is best. My granddaughter rides in both a rear and front facing because the one car seat doesn't fit her and she is 19 lbs. Just use your best judgment

you should find one that does all three, rear face , forward face and booster, or even one that does both forward and rear facing they tend to have higher weight limits , mine rear faces up to 35 pounds. I would keep him rear facing, my daughter didnt reach 20 pounds till she was 18 months and her Dr had me keep her rear facing the whole time, he said its not the age or the weight alone they need to meet both to be safe forward facing.

hi krissy - just wanted to let you know that i have the safety 1st three in one as a spare in my parents vehicle and i really like it. my son is 23lbs and 15 months and is still rear facing with lots of room in it.
