20 month old grandson that screams bloody-murder?

My 20 month old grandson will say a few choice understandable words, and has a sweet disposition at times, the rest of the time he is screaming! Not just a common scream,,a scream that can raise the dead! Of course any kind of punishment only makes him louder. I'm really afraid the child is mentally ill. Also he is so obsessive of his mothers attention,,that he will scream and push her away from the stove as she is trying to cook because she can't hold him,,,I know she spoiled him from infancy, but will it EVER end???I work the night shift, and I have to try too sleep while he cries!!! Frustrated Gran-Gran!

Tina,,, Thank U !! Your suggestion of giving him a safe place to play, alone, might just work wonders for a lot of his misery is that he has a 31/2 older sister that hates it when he touches her Barbie Dolls!!! And the advice about sticking with the punishment will certainly help in the future!!! Thank U again!! Frustrated Gran-Gran!

I'm sorry but boys tend to be like that my cousin use to scream like that. It's was like nails running down a chalk board and gave you an enormous headache. Boys tend to be more like that at that age. My son is 18 months and is starting to become very clingy like that I can't go to the toilet without him getting upset. I try to also let my son have a bit of time to himself in his room to wind down sometimes. I have a safety gate on his door put him in there give him a drink and then he just goes and plays with his toys for a while. I also have to calming music playing or dvd to take his mind off of me for a while so I can get a little house work done. It'll get better in time. The important thing later on is the mother sticks to her guns. For eg the child is grounded or has a toy or game taken away as a punishment don't give in. Stick to the punishment because they learn what buttons to push and how to get their way.
