Have you heard of singulair, its a small chewable tablet they take one every night before bed, my daughter is 4 not long been diagnosed with asthma but has constant tonsilitis on top of it, the tablet seems to help prevent most of the coughing attacks. and its a non steriod medication.

He likely needs regular breathing treatments, via the nubulizer, until the cough is under control. For our daughter, that sometimes means she gets a breathing treatment 4-5x a day when her cough is relentless and persistent. We use Xopenex, because Albuterol made her too hyper. Watching a show while getting the treatment helps her sit still.

thank you all for ur advice. he is doing alot better after his dr prescribed him more meds..he has had asthma since he was a baby, you think you finally have it under control when out of nowhere the coughing and wheezing start...but thank you all again

have you tried a wheat free, dairy free diet? Also i would try chinese medicine as well as acupuncture. My daughter had SEVERE exzema and working on her diet as well as chinese herbs, acupuncture, naturopathic medecine has really helped. It is SO MUCH work....but well worth it. She has a little bit now but we dont use meds etc. anymore.

My mom is reading a book right now that suggests that along with his meds, make sure he gets lots and lots of water and up his salt intake a little bit. I have asthma as well, and I think that my youngest is going to end up with it. It is really horrible to sit and watch and feel helpless when they can not breathe. Make sure no one smokes around him, keep him inside if possible when the pollen count is high.

Allergist specialist told me Never to give an asthmatic child over the counter cough medicine. My child has never wheezed, he just coughed uncontrollably at times. The way you control the cough is with albuterol (my choice is the kind you nebulize, if the nebulizer is not available use the spacer with the atomized albuterol). When he starts with cold symptoms I give him pulmacort (again nebulized kind), other Dr's prescribe Qvar which serves the same purpose. This medication has to be prescribed by doctor. If you have not yet, take him to pulmonologist or allergy specialist and they can put him on a treatment that is specially designed for his breathing/couging issues. Wish you the best, I know how frustrating this can be!

Go to a herbal store and find natural remedies, since i never had one with asthma i cant tell you the products, but their are plenty of herbs that help and are not chemical ...
I think the advise from below is all you can do ... but also check out the herbs if he is not allergic to them ...

get a peak flow meter from the pharmacy. track his peak flows, and show his physician. If they are consistently low, ask your doctor to prescribe a steroid inhaler like Flovent with a spacer. Singulair can be helpful for preventing flares, as well as the antihistamines such as claritn, zyrtec, zyzal, etc.

I would re-visit his doctor, and if you have an allergy/asthma clinic, then go there & have him re-evaluated. They can re-test him, see what his triggers are, adjust meds as needed, and make many more recommendations!!

I also have a 5yr old son, who was diagnosed with Asthma as a baby, fortunatley he doesn't have episodes very often. I have heard that Carpet in a home can be bad for kids with asthma, I think cause of all the stuff that gets traped in the carpet in padding. And I have heard that Swamp coolers are bad for kids with asthma.



Whenever My son, starts a cough, I give him robatuson, if it doesn't go away, I start the nebulizar breathing treatments and it seems to end the cough within a couple days.

I am sure the doctor has told you this but have you looked at your enviroment? Get allergy free bed linens, don't vacuum around him or sweep or dust etc., make sure no one wears strong scented colognes or perfumes, perhaps he needs to be on a long term anthistamine, get a humidfier warm mist for winter and cool mist for summer, don't take him out into the cold air quickly just some ideas for you : )

My 6 yr old has pretty bad asthma. Controlled most of the time (she like to play football so it can play up). When it's really bad put a wet towel on a hot radiator it keeps the room moist. It's important that he's not in a dry room as his asthma can play up. xx

Hi Yemen,
I have asthma and my daughter was diagnosed at 9 months are you using a nebuliser whenever i notice it comming on i put my daughter on strait away try to keep him calm do you use singlets when mine show signs of asthma i make them wear a singlet under their t-shirt ect it just adds a little warmth to their chest also i make them wear shoes and socks after 4 in the afternoon as the air changes to a more night air which is cooler. I find that a humidifier makes it worse. also look into swimming it helps them to learn how to regulate their breathing i learnt how to control it without medication by breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth slowly when coughing. There is no medical explination for any of these methods but i have found them to work for me and my daughter. My dad used them with me as a child and also for himself

I know the coughing is horrible, my 3 year old daughter was diagnosed about 3 months ago with seasonal asthma. It is worth checking out asthma websites and speeking to your doctor again if the prednisolone has not worked, it may be the case they will up his medication as it may not be enough. Also check the temperature in his room, it may be too warm, they advise about 18 degrees max, also you can use steamers if the air is too dry as this will dry them out and make them cough.

I completley understand how stressful it is as there is nothing you can't take it away.

see if a cool air humidifier/vaporizer will help...the cool air should moisten his mouth & throat so he shouldn't cough as much. i hope this helps!

I have asthma also. I do best when I stay away from things that trigger a flare up. See if he is bothered by pollen, flowers, grass, smoke, dust, mold, perfumes, pets, and household cleaners. These things make me cough more. Try an air purifier in his room especially,and try not to let the air get too dry. Use a cool mist humidifier. If he does not start to get better soon on his meds, call his doctor. It usually takes two to four weeks for it to work fully. Also watch him in the cold and when he is running around as these also can trigger coughing. I hope this helps.
