Im not sure how much I should be feeding my 7 week old. He usually takes 150ml and I thought that might be too much but then sometimes he is still hungry and I give him and extra 30ml. Is this too much? How much should I be feeding him? I give him 6 feeds a day.

Every baby is different and no formula label is going to be right all the time. Follow your baby's cues. If they still seem hungry, add more. If they don't finish the bottle, make less. My daughter took 4 oz. bottles for months, even when other babies half her age were drinking 6-8oz. at a time.

You are doing fine! Almost everything about raising kids is trial and error :-)

Hi Jessica,

My babies were always big eaters. By the time both my son and daughter were seven weeks old they were drinking approximately seven to seven and a half ounces at each feeding. (I started my son on rice cereal at eight weeks because he was drinking every two hours otherwise). My daughter by this time was already sleeping through the night and at her last feeding at around 11pm she was drinking about ten ounces and she would be good until approximately six or seven or eight in the morning. Different children eat different amounts at different times and if he is going through a growth spurt he might need a little more right now and in about a week or two he could go back down to 150ml or even less. If you are worried consult with your pediatrician or family doctor. Good luck and enjoy your baby.

Our dr told us that a baby should have between 22 and 32 oz of formual in 24 hrs. Of course, sometimes it would be 34 or 36, but I was pretty diligent about not feeding him more than 32oz on any given day. He is now 1 and we are off of formula and bottles and he is perfectly height/weight proportional.

Rule of thumb is to multiply 2.5 times your baby's body weight to determine the number of ounces he needs in 24 hours. To determine how much to feed every feeding you would have to divide that number by the number of times he eats in a day. I use this equation as a lactation consultant to help mothers determine how much to pump. As for the formula, you can start there and be sure to let your pediatrician know how much you are feeding. Babies are more or less hungry at different times of day or night. I suggest you look more closely at the amount that he is eating in a day to make sure that he is getting enough.

Are we talking formula or breastmilk?

With formula it shows on the back how much they would need at what age.
With breast you just feed them whatever they want as they would never get overweight on breastmilk. It also digest much quicker than formula

Also, I found that my baby was eating because she wanted to suckle. Eventually she found her thumb, but when the bottle was gone she was more content having a pacifier and snuggling.

I gave my baby 100ml. Call your pediatrician. That's what they're there for. Also, read "On Becoming Babywise" Its an incredible guide to the basics! And it helped me get my baby girl to sleep through the night at 6weeks old. Now at 11 months she sleeps consistently 12 hours.

When my son was that age I worked part time so the bottles he got when I worked were 4oz and then about a month later 6oz.

baby knows when they are full... you feed them to much all they do is puke.... better to over feed than underfeed I think. Feed until they are satisfied has always worked for me!!

let your baby be your guide. As long as you are not forcing him to finish a bottle then between 4-6 oz (120-180ml) every 3-4 hours is about right. Just like you and me, some meals we are more hungry than others, so he might take 150 one meal and 180 the next.

Your baby knows when its full If your baby is still acting like they are hungry than give them more but what i did with my daughter was if she still acted like she was hungry i would put another half ounce in the bottle then i would see how she would do that and if she was not spitting it up then i would keep her at that but if they are spitting up when you give them more then back off that half ounce when i asked her doctor about that she told me to add a half ounce then if she not spitting up then let her have it but if she was spitting up then back off of it

I agree 6 0z is about right. If your child is still hungry then add another ounce.
