Wil has really slowed down i the weight department. He has only put on 60gms in last 6 weeks and at his age they should be averaging 60-100gms a week. He has 4 breastfeeds a day (lately one at night too) and 2-3 solids. Could my milk not have enough guts in it? I dont understand how he could not be putting more on. He has grown 3cm in 6 weeks so its not like he's not growing at all.

My daughter has always been slow at gaining weight. She eats all the time, but since she started being able to jump in her jumper and move around she has been on the go none stop, so her dr just figured her metabloism (sp??) is fast. If your baby is happy and healthy I wouldnt worry about it too much, but I would talk to your dr about it.

your doing really well, i had to stop breast feeding at 3 month as he started refusing it. as long as hes still growing, producing wet nappies and smelly ones too there should be no cause for concern. If he wasnt getting the milk he needed he would be feeding more often and getting frutrated at the breast, as long as hes feeding and coming off when hes full he should be getting the foremilk and the hind milk and coming away satisfied ... breast fed babies dont gain weight like bottle fed babies do ... breastfed babies weight tends to even out. By 9 months he should be eating 3 meals a day plus his milk feeds eg from hipp organic weaning chart ...

Breakfast - small bowl of cereal. Piece of toast, plus milk feed.
lunch - savoury meal, followed by fruit or dessert, plus milk
tea - savoury meal or sarny, yogurt dessert or fruit plus milk feed.

if ur still concerned tho keep on at ur health visitor and or doctor until your happy hes ok ... dont worry too much :) x

wow my girl is 11 months old and still breast feeding it but uses it more as a drink now. she has 4 solid meals and snaks each day and weighs just under 7 kilos she is nearly walking ad crawling flat out shes just a littly and she is doing everything a normal baby shuld be some babies are just 'small' and it depends on the parents as well!! Ur breast milk is now more like the drink to wash the food down instead of the main meal. its the desert. and breastfeeding will ensure ur baby has so much healthiness, dont question your breastmilk i have no doubt that now your adding regular snacks that you will see an improvement but if not in the weight gain dont stress too much after all he weighs more than my 11 month old!

Thanks girls. I went to the paed yday and she isnt worried about him either. However she did say to start giving him solids BEFORE breastmilk so he is filling up on solids and topping up on milk. I did question the whole "milk is best" thing but she said that yes, up till 6mths but now he needs more nutrients from foods so will see how we go now. He weighed in at 7.92kgs and 69cm long.

I wouldn't worry at all, but if you want you could try using solids with a higher calorie and healthy fat content. For example, avacado can be mashed and is very healthy with "good" fat and high calories. You can mix it with peaches or banannas. Also, cheese is high fat/calories but also calcium and can be melted on mashed brocolli.

My baby girl didn't gain any weight from 6months till 10months. She just stayed at 8kg's and has now picked up almost 2kg's in the last 3 months. I wasn't worried as my doctor didn't worry about it. She ate (still does) more than enough food and was happy and healthy (still is, very blessed with a really healthy baby who hasn't been sick yet). So unless he's suffering under it, like he cries all the time and doesn't look healthy, I really wouldn't worry to much. But ask your doctor to be on the safe side.

Have you thought of starting him on cereal? At 8 months, my daughter was eating cereal and baby foods along with 3-4 breastfeedings. I breastfed till she was 14 months, but by that time, it was down to about 2 breastfeedings a day. I don't think my body was really producing that much by that time either so we tapered off together.

dont worry, my son has always been small when he was born he wore premi diapers till about 6 months he is now 4 yrs old and at his last doctor appt. weighed 33pds. HE is very healthy and active with a good appetite but when the milk wasnt enough when he was younger, we would cut the nipple of the bottle and put that gerber ceareal in his bottle or blended fresh fruit with the milk like a milk shake to settle the hungry stomach =0)

If he is happy and still giving you wet and dirty diapers don't worry about it. They tend to slow down and then will suddenly have a growth spurt. They also fluctuate in thier appetites especially when they are nearing two. Don't waste your time on worries... just enjoy him while he is still small. And breast feeding! Good for you. Your body will give him whatever he needs be it antiboties, fats and calories.

2-3 solids is not enough, do you offer more? My 7mo snacks constantly, on puffs, fruit (I put it in a mesh feeder) plus 5-6 meals a day plus about 24oz-30oz of formula a day. Obviously you can't 'make' your child eat, but maybe try offering different things? My pediatrician also told me my daughter was under weight, well she crawls like a maniac and pulls herself up on everything. I didn't realize how hungry she was either no I know her 'routine' and how much she usually eats :)

If he's growing and your doctor is not concerned, I wouldn't worry too much about the weight. Babies do slim down a bit after they start crawling and then walking. At 8 months... is he crawling now? Maybe getting ready to. Ask your doctor.
