9-month boy standing in crib - time to buy big boy bed?

Hi - Our boy just started crawling Easter weekend and now is very proud that he can stand in his crib. I am worried as it's a smaller crib and we can't lower the mattress, so the rail comes to his nipple area. I read somewhere that you should transition to the big boy bed at this stage as it's a risk of him trying to climb out of his crib. He is also getting up in the middle of the night to exercise his new skill of standing, which is exhausting... Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Debbie

Standing in the crib is really not the issue for when you move them to a bed; it is when they try to climb out. BUT it sounds like you have a minimal crib and in your situation you probably need to move him. You could look for the net but that depends on the size of your crib and if it is a smaller one the net will not fit.

As for getting up in the middle of night to exercise his new skills... this is normal and a phase. Their observation of the world has changed drastically. Before they where seeing it from the floor and now crawling gives them mobility and a new angle and now cruising by holding on is yet another new perspective. The newness of it all will vanish and he will go back to his old patterns.

my baby is 13 months old and we accidentally left the rail in the low position and he fell out. thankfully he was ok...after that we make sure his rail is up high. if you take him out of a crib when he decides to get up while you are sound asleep he could get hurt..i'd keep him in and i reccomend a crib net ...it looks like a tent the baby can't suffocate but also can't get out..he can still see through the net..it just attatches to the top of his crib. Toys R Us and Baby Depot have them.

hi my son is 21 months but he is still in his cot well it is a cot bed so it is a lot bigger and it turns into a toddler bed, i dont think he is ready to go in big bed yet because he is constantly tossing and turning in the night he would fall out. if u do get a big boy bed get one with the sides on so he cant fall out, or get a cot bed as they are great value for money and they have different levels on it. i used this for both my sons they are really sturdy.

Debbie,

Look for one of those low toddler beds that come with side rails. I believe Wal Mart has them...though it's been quite a while since I've shopped for one. As well, invest in a strong baby gate to put at his door, if you haven't already. Don't go cheap if you can help it on this purchase as you will be able to move this around the house as he becomes more mobile.

Baby proof his room if you haven't already, but make sure to leave some drawers and doors that he can open and drag his stuff out in. Also, this would be a great time to set up kitchen cabinets that he can drag things like tupperware or gladware out of. This is such a fun time...an exhausting time as well. Let him keep his curiousity going, but keep him safe!

sounds like you have a plan though! Good luck and have fun!
