My niece is 7 and in the second grade. However, she reads at a 6th grade reading level. We are having a hard time finding things to challenge her that are also appropriate in terms of content. Do any of you have an idea as to something I can suggest to my sister for my niece.

One more thing:  to be sure, the other titles and others that have been recommended are fabulous choices.  Check out www.ala.org for lists of award-winners over the years, but keep in mind that Charlotte's Web didn't win the award when it was published!  However, the award lists do provide a nice starting point.

Don't CENSOR (the schools and other parents will attempt enough of that), and don't let the blind quest for AR points (with generally poor questioning levels and dubious leveling) squash her God-given ability to read above her grade level!!!  Just supervise, and be there so that a responsible adult (you or your sister or someone else) is available to discuss the issues that may arise.  (That means that those adults should be reading with her!)

Take her to a bookstore and let her browse.  Strong readers not only appreciate and embrace choice but also know how to manage it.  Guide her to read book reviews, peruse covers, read the back blurbs, you know, to "shop" for a book that grabs her interest.  As she takes ownership of her reading life, she'll experience books with enjoyment and engagement.  Buy a cheap bookshelf at IKEA, find a local used bookstore (I love Katy Budget Books in Houston--I believe they have a website), and help her build her own library.  She'll never forget the aunt who fostered her love of reading.

I teach fifth grade and many of the novels on a fifth and sixth grade level contain more mature content.  While Hatchet is an amazing novel, it is not for a kid under the age of 10.  I would suggest reading biographies on famous Americans.   I like the ones titled, Picture Book of ... .  They make those books on Abe Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and other famous Americans.

Bud Not Buddy, Bridge to Terebitha (may have spelled that wrong), Where the Red Fern Grows, the Liminity Snickets series (may have spelled that wrong too), Judy Blume books, Beverly Cleary books, Poppy by Avi, Holes

You can go to the AR website and check book levels.  Anything at a 6.0 or higher may not have appropriate content.

The Chronicles of Narnia are always good books and are decent when it comes to point value.  They are on the right reading level, for the most part.  You can't go wrong with Where the Red Fern Grows, either.  That is required reading for the 6th grade at our school.  My daughter likes the Anne of Green Gables series, but I'm not sure of the reading/point level.  She also enjoys The Clique, but I don't know if it is AR.  Is her school doing the AR testing online or just through the library?
