Adoption process for a stepmom

I am a stepmom of an 8 year old boy whom had been living with myself and his father for 4 years now. The last time his biological mother spoke to him was his 7th birthday and she hasnt seen him or attempted to see him in over 2 years. He cally me mom and her aunty as he does not really know her. I would like to adopt him as he is in all aspects except biologically, my child. I need help and advice as to how to go about getting his biological mom to agree as well as the process.

Talk to a lawyer. I am in a similar situation and I was told by a lawyer that we have to have the mother's rights terminated (whch is a long process) before we can even start the adoption proceedings.

talk with your son about all aspects of adoption. I would get legal advice on how to go about doing this each state have different laws. first and formost make sure this is something he wants just as much as you. this what I'm running to now. My husband adopted my daughter in 09 and now she is feeling like she abandoned her bio-father. he was never a dad at all. we are working on things with her, and letting her see for herself what he is and how he is.
