CoM is a great place to get advice from fellow moms, however.......

There are certain controversial topics that are discussed on this forum quite frequently. ie: when to start cereal / solids, what to give for reflux, what to do about rashes,, circumcision, breasfeeding, constipation, failure to thrive, eczema, fever, etc.... you name it, we have questions about it.

The one thing that I want to remind moms of is:

No matter what kind of advice you may receive from CoM forums...it is ALWAYS best to CHECK WITH YOUR CHILD'S DOCTOR FIRST.

We have wonderful, caring moms that always mean to help as best they can, but, as wonderful as they are, they are not medical professionals.

Please consult your child's doctor before implementing any advice you have gathered from the CoM forums.

Thank you,

~Jenn~

That's just plain common sense which I am sure a lot of moms don't have!

On major issues dr. should be the one to talk to, but it is nice to know that my child or myself are not the only ones out there going through things... thank you moms

I like this post. Others mums may have great advice that worked fine, but what if something did go wrong and they just didn't know it was connected? Or it's usually fine but it does increase risk of something? Doctors can give you more general info on that sort of thing. Unfortunately, doctors don't know everything, and some info is what's fashionable. It's easy to get put off by opinionated medical professionals, and the ones we remember are the opinionated ones, but there are heaps of open thinking medical professionals too, they're just quieter about it. :-) Get all the info first I reckon. A little from column A, a little from column B.
And wow there are some people with chips on their shoulders! I have to say, I haven't actually come onto the forums before, but I saw a topic i was interested in, and have found people being slammed for their methods ie smacking, and even what they call their unborn child! Have an opinion, sure. Voice it even, but don't tear down other mums! Isn't this supposed to be a support network? Everything is not an attack!

I agree , there is so many mums that have been through it all and, they mean well , but your Medical practioner or baby clinic is the safest way to go. As every child is different and there needs are diferent.

I don't think anyone should be offended, just think of it as a warning label. Good post!

I tell new mothers to listen to what is said, keep what they want and discard the rest. No stress. They are the parent. It is their decision not anyone elses. Always check out what you hear before you use it. ♥

Of course you a right Jenn. Sometimes because we have been through these thing's we feel we are an authority, but our solution may not suit another child. It's always good advice to get your doctor's advice.

We all want to believe that it is unnecessary to post this topic but the truth of the matter is there are people that get desperate and will try just about anything at times and regret it after the fact so yes it is important to remind folks to take it to a medical professional first

Yes i think that we are for the most part pretty smart mums! But at the same time i am sure that there are a lot of first time Mums out on this site. They need to know that as loving and seemingly harmless advice that is given is not always the best for thier child. They should be reminded that Doctors do know more medical speaking, but at the same time they dont always know best for the child. That can only be decided by the parnets. BUT girls PLEASE use COMMON SENSE when takin in advice from anyone! even your dr. If ur told to give ur child (example) some bleach rethink it a bit.

Jenn, good reminder...and then if the doctor's answer still doesn't

"fit" right, ask for a referral for a second opinion......

Majority would be smart enough, but there are people in the world that will jump on someone's suggestion and when it all goes wrong who do they blame? Instead of themselves for not checking it out or asking a professional, they blame the person that suggested it! I agree, Great post Jenn!

How about get some different opinions and research them THEN go ask your doctor what they think. You will have some knowledge with which to understand their response and clarify what it is you really want to know.

good advices should be appreciated....but, if you're unsure and confused, it's better to seek help from a doctor...this post is ok...most of moms are just taking advices from other moms and end up regretting because it made things worse for their kids...

A nice reminder! In New Zealand under 6 get free doctors visits so if in doubt go and see the doctor. Better to know for sure than be worried and uncertain.

Some advice can be great while others not good. Each mum needs to follow her own feeling about advice. What one may do and say is ok for her, doesn't mean anyone else will agree. We are all different and entitled to our own beliefs, theorys etc but no two could be ever the same ....... common sense should provail!!!!

Yes, please be careful when it comes to other peoples advice, let's face it there is great advice out there but there is also some "poor" advice. Read them all carefully and if your not sure then take it to the next level and ask your Dr. Better safe than sorry!!

Remember too, if you are not happy with or feel you just don't see eye to eye with your current pediatrician, there are many of them to choose from. Ask other mom's who they use and what they like or dislike about their experiences. It is okay to look for a good fit. These providers will be with you and your children for a long time.

Good point! I am a health care professional with expertise in Mother-Baby care. The advise that I post is based what I tell Moms in the health care setting that I work at.

This is definitely true. I am a retired RN, and I worked in a newborn nursery most of the time. We had to refer them to the doctor for questions.

That is very true Jennifer! Moms can give other moms advice on all kinds of things! Talking to other moms does help a lot! I know it does me! I do agree about when it comes to medicine. You should ask your child's doctor before giving any medication! Mom's use your own judgment and do what you know is right for your child or children! Listen to what your instincts are telling you! If you feel like you need to take your kid to the doctor and others are telling you to wait, go with what your instincts are telling you! Trust me on this! Good-luck to all moms out there! God Bless and take care!
