Angela is almost 11 months and she does not want to walk she barely crawls because she doesn't like to sit. She does stand up but she doesn't stand up by herself if she let's go off what she's hanging to she will fall. I tough she will be walking for her 1st b-day party but I don't think that'll happen. Is this normal?

The average age to walk is sometime around 12 months. That's the average. My girls were preemies and didn't walk until they were 14 months old. I'm in therapy and know that there's really no concern untill she gets 16 months or older. It is though, really good for her if she is crawling or rolling around, while you're waiting for her to take her first steps. Contact your Dr. w/ your concerns if you notice any other developemental delays going on presently, besides not walking, Normal walking around 9-16 months.

hi while yes this is normal like the other mothers have said. I would still get ur child health nurse to have a look at her . my 3 yr old daughter has low muscle tone and is still not walking at 3yrs.
my other daughter has just started walking she is 17months (she didn't craw she bum scuffled). i took her to my child health nurse as was worried she had the same thing as her sister. the nurse noticed her upper body was not very strong and her joints were to flexible both my girls r going to physio and it has done wonders.
So just to be on the safe side I'd take her down to ur local child health nurse and have a chat.

Hi Allison how do they tell if your child has low muscle tone? i posted on here i think mine wa sthe first post but docs have often suggested that me to me but nothing has ben done about it. if your child has low muscle tone what does it mean for them in the furture will everything eventually even itself out? mine is 12 months and just started sitting up but not strong enough to get on her hands and knees yet for more then a few seconds and when u pull her up by her hands her head still lags too much

Hi Melissa well the docs or physio can tell just buy feeling her muscles and joints. i would get on to it don't  let the docs blow you off get your doc to refer you to a child development center ( that way the physio is free) or to a privet physio. your daughter sounds very similar to what Amaliya was like , she didn't roll till she was 13 months old and was 16/17 months before she sat up on her own. We have been told that she will have this condition all her life and that it is on the other end of the scale to muscular dystrophy. all her joints are  to soft and flexible so when she stands her knees kind of over rotate witch hurts her so she doesn't stand for long , she gets worn out and tiered very easily after only a little physical activity and have been told this may always be the case.

let us know how you get on

Totally normal! Don't worry at all. Most babies walk between like 10-15 months. Yours will walk when she's ready/wants to.

My oldest started walking (took her first "alone" steps) ON her first birthday.

My middle started walking @ 13months & the youngest did not start walking until he was 15 or 16 months old.  ALL kids develop differentlly she will get there just give her time & opportunity.

sweetie,

i've read your past history - understandable concerns with your path to motherhood.  I will be honest, let go of your inhibitions and let your child grow free of your hovering.  In child development it is the exploration that sparks transitional growth.  Parents who are over-protective or guilt inhibited are prone to hold and carry babies at young ages w/out realizing they are depriving development.  Put your precious down and let her explore, she needs to crawl (encourage it), she needs to fall & observe her boundaries, and then she will walk with confidence - knowing she may land on her tush, but she will be okay to get up and move forward! good luck & have your own self confidence ( also know as a motherly instinct)

My little boy had low muscle tone and didn't walk until he was almost two.  My doctor referred us to First Steps, and a physical therapist came to our home once a week for an hour.  It didn't cost us anything either.

My eldest daughter didn't walk until she was 14 and a half months. Most babies don't walk until 12-16 months. Don't worry  :) She'll do it when she's ready. I wouldn't be concerned at all until 18 months. Try standing her with her back against a wall and holding a special treat or toy just out of her reach see if she'll try that one little step :) Try buying a walking toy for her. We got a Fisher Price Gobble n' Go Hippo worked great my second was walking by 9 1/2 months. Good luck and have fun with it!

My baby just walking right befor 18 months a few weeks ago. At her 15 month check up the doctor suggested a physical therapist look at her. They will want to check muscle tone. If she is standing while holding onto furniture, cruising, bouncing or standing alone that is all good signs.  We just found that my baby could get where she needed faster by crawling and now she is walking all over finally. Check w/your pediatrician to be on the safe side and just practice walking with her while holding her hands to help build muscle tone.

It just means that she is going to be very intelligent! Babies that do not walk as early as others are said to be great at Math and Science! No fear, she will be able to walk down the aisle someday!

That is interesting, I've never heard that!  My first didn't walk until she was almost 15 months and she gets her highest marks on her report card in the math area and is very interested in science-related things.  Huh, I'll have to look into that theory. :-)   My second walked at 10 months and is more language/people oriented.  Very interesting theory.

To the original poster - don't worry about it!  11 months is pretty early still to be walking actually, and I'm sure she's going to be fine.  Like many others said, one day she'll just decide she wants to walk and that'll be the end of it - or rather the beginning of all new trouble.  hehehe

Let's put it this way. I have three children. My oldest daughter walked at thirteen months, my son who is my middle child ten months, and my youngest daughter on her first birthday. If you are worried as your pediatrician. They will know if there is anything you should be concerned about. Don't fret, babies do things when they are ready to.

This is not unusual, it happens, but if you are that worried, check with your pediatrician just to quell your fears.

Very normal.
Average time to walk is 14mths actually.
Some babies are just later than others and 11mths is still pretty early to walk.
My son didn't even crawl til the week of his 1st birthday! He rolled all over to get to where he wanted to go.
He cruised furniture and walls for 6mths too, before he decided to walk alone.

My first, a girl, started a walking a day after her birthday, and I thought my second would walk sooner, but he didn't start till almost 13 months....And they both turned out fine. They may walk slower but I don't know any kindergartner that can't walk, talk, or not potty trained, so it will happen.

my daughter is 12 months and like yours not standing by herself unless shes holding onto something even then we have to be there becuse she can fall, she can only commando crawl and started sitting up jst before her birthday. i think every baby does things at different times, mine has had MRI and everything done and is healthy
