I am uncertain at this point wither it was an accident, but in the event it isn't I am offended that someone found my pain somehow amusing.

During the 8th week of my first pregnancy, I started miscarrying, and ended up have an emergency D&C. The drug you're writing about is an anti-inflammatory drug, that happens to also be used to induce labor after a pregnancy that will not go full-term. Whatever you decide, you'll most likely be advised to hold off trying to get pregnant for at least two months. A close friend just gave birth to twins after trying for many years. Hang in there. Do not stress. Allow yourself some room to let go my dear.

I have PCOS as well, so I understand the difficulties. Have you asked your doctor how much experience he has with women with PCOS. Some doctor's are really familiar with it and some aren't. I would make sure my doctor was up to date on the latest info or ask for a referal for a doctor who was more aware of such things. I was perscribed glucophage (metformin) for treatment of the symptoms. It is a drug used for type 2 diabetes(which I have now, but didn't at the time I was first diagnosed). It is also used to help patients with PCOS. It can help with fertility issues, ovarian cysts, and reduce the insulin resistance associated with PCOS. I don't know how much reasearch you've done on it, I apologize if I'm telling you stuff you already know. But, incase you are new to PCOS, try doing a search for Symdrome O as well as PCOS. There are some great websites out there. I don't remember what they are, I haven't been on them in years, but I did get a lot of good information from the web. I really believe that glucophage was the main factor for me in concieving my children. With my first, I had been taking it for about a year when we decided to try fertility meds. I took a pregnancy test before I started b/c my periods have always been irregular and Surprise! With my current pregnancy I had been on glucophage for only 3 months. I also had a dye test(I forget the name of it) befor my 1st pregnancy to see if everything was working right. My doctor told me that sometimes that test will open the way for a pregnancy too. Just some things to think about for when you are ready to try again. Don't rush anything, you've just been through a painful experience. Take the time you need to heal physically and emotionally.

i lost a baby after 2 years of trying at 12 weeks along. I am so sorry for your loss. Knowing that i wasn't alone really helped. I agree with Krista E. Do some research before taking it.

I'm so sorry Danielle!!! I work in a OB/GYN clinic and have given that medication to many patients over the years. It is only meant to help your uterus contact to help your body expel the remaining products of conception. We also use it to induce moms that have not delivered by 41-42 wks when they are pregnant. It is a pretty safe medication. The doctors will never give you anything that is unsafe or could possibly cause you harm. I hope that bit of info helps.

I had to take that med when I was 20 due to a misseed miscarriage...I am now 23 and have 2 kids ages 2 yrs and 4 weeks....took us 6 months to concieve my oldest after taking the pill...I think the warning is there for continued use..the pill didn't work for me and they said I could take it again but I opted for a D&C instead.

I will recomend not to take the medication. I had a similar experience 5 years ago and i was heart break. I did wait till my body expeld the pregnancy. All the medication has second effect, so just wait until the body does the work.

Misoprostol AKA cytotec is a very dangerous drug intended to treat pancreatic ulcers but often used to induce labor or abortion or to speed up a miscarraige. The drug company who produces this medication does approve of it's use on pregnant women and even went so far as to mail out hundreds of thousands of letters to OBs and hospitals around the nation asking that they not use it for those purposes. It can cause excessive bleeding that in some cases have required a hysterctomy to stop and women and babies have died from it's use as an induction drug, I actually had a cytotec induction about 4 years ago and it was a nightmare, luckily my baby and I both survived without too many side effects but she was covered in bruises when she was born because the contractions were so much stronger and longer than normal. A miscarraige is painful enough, I can't imagine having the physical damage on top of it all, I highly reccommend waiting for your body to deal with it on its own.

I had a similar situation, my second pregnancy, where there wasn't a heartbeat and finally at 12weeks the doctors said the baby had stopped growing at 6weeks. I opted for the pills as well, and everything was pretty much over the next morning. I am so sorry for your loss! We did end up pregnant with a beautiful baby girl only about 4 months later. Oh and believe the pills if taken orally, are actually prescribed for something else. So that may be what the "do not take during childbearing years" is referring to?

I haven't had any experience with this medication but I have had multiple miscarriages and had the d&c on each one. My heart goes out to you because I know exactly how it feels to lose a baby. But after multiple losses, I was able to carry a baby to full term. I now have 2 beautiful kids, a 4 yr old son and 2 yr old daughter. So don't give up; my prayers are with you.

Just to give you some reassurance, really, but I had to have a termination at 13 weeks, due to massive complications, and they gave me Misoprostol. We concieved again within 6 months, and the only reason it took that long, I believe, was because we were not allowed to concieve for 3 months after the termination. We now have a very healthy, gorgeous little boy.

I have already started taking the pills.

I didn't want to risk a three week wait for my body to do it on its own. I also didn't want to prolong the stress and sadness of the process.

Two hours after taking the first couple pills my body had started to expel the pregnancy.
I had contacted my doctor and he gave me a more detailed account with that I should expect this week in terms results, and time-line.

are you still taking them? I had a miscarrage at 10 weeks and opted to let my body "do its thing"...that was hard waiting. If i had to do it over i would have opted for the pills. I see that this post is two days ago, have you had any progress? with the pill it is more likely that everything will be expelled...i ended having a D&C because not all of it came out. Hope this helps. sorry for your loss, i know even at seven weeks you had dreams and hopes for this child, people will say "maybe it was for the best" but it was a real baby par of your life. I don't know it you are religious but there is a book out there called "I Will Hold You In Heaven"...you might wanna check it out, it may provide some comfort. Julie

i have no experience with this medication...i am so sorry for your loss...i think your doctor should have told you rather than you reading that...i would ak him for an explanation...i would wait a few months to try again and then i would add fem gest to your daily routine...a tiny amunt rubbed in to the insie of your wrists...the label now says may cause cancer but i would ignore it because i have seen in seem to be the turning point with conception, improved periods, stopping of cramping and more as it seems to regulate your body...recomended by the doctor who wrote "what every woman needs to knnow about menapause" and "what every woman needs to know about perimenapause" ...i recommend it to everyone i know who is trying to conceive or having menstraul difficulties...everyone reports positive results...it could be coincidence but i doubt it that a gal who hadn't gotten pregnant in nine yrs finally was pregnant with twins, and the same happened to a cousin...both had girls so look out!!! all the best to you whatever you decide

So sorry to hear about your MC. I had a MC in April. We found out at my 9 week appt that the baby had stopped progressing just after 8 weeks. I didn't want to wait for the fetus to pass naturally so opted for a D&C. It was my first miscarriage after having a healthy boy 2 years ago which we tried for 4 years to get pregnant with him. I understand your discouraged and I feel for you, but I do know that once I stopped "trying" & started enjoying the time with my husband we got pregnant easily both times and are hoping to be pregnant again soon. My thoughts are with you and your husband and hope for a healthy pregnancy when the time is right.

Danielle, I'm so sorry this happened to you! If this isn't your first miscarriage, you should consider asking your doctor to do a full blood workup on you. Most doctors will wait for two or even three miscarriages in a row before they test, because this has been the standard for more than 30 years. I've been through multiple miscarriages and have one healthy son, but because I never had three in a row, I didn't get tested. Then I lost a child in September 2009 at 17 weeks. Doctor called it a fluke and said try again. I got pregnant again in November 2010, and lost our daughter in February at 16 weeks. My doctor freaked and ordered the full battery of tests. Turns out I have Factor V Leiden, a genetic mutation that predisposes people who have it to blood clots. Had this test been done after my first mid-term miscarraige, I'd be getting ready to deliver my daughter. We as mothers need to demand the testing sooner rather than later. It's a simple blood test, and they're all usually covered by insurance.

Don't blame yourself for what happened. Get counseling now, both for you and your husband. It's tough to endure a loss no matter how far along you are in your pregnancy. most people don't get it and some even say stuff like, "Well at least you miscarried before you got really attached." They don't mean it the way it sounds, but it still hurts.

Hang in there, and don't give up.

My heart goes out to you. I lost a pregnancy at 6.5 weeks and my recent one at 7.5 weeks. I think the Dr.'s know what they are doing and would not give you something to harm you. Almost all the Dr.'s I have talked to have kids or want kids and can kind of understand your wants and frustration. Hang in there it will all work out. God will never leave any of us even if it seems like it sometimes.

I dont know about the medication but i would def call ur doctor. I had a miscarriage six months before conceiving my twin girls now two. It was a terrible experience and my dr was very cold and distant. I had a d&c by a great dr and switched dr.s at that point. He discussed everything and his office staff helped me with fertility info. Im very sorry for your loss but dont lose hope.

I have been pregnant 7 times and have given birth to 2 beautiful children. One time I miscarried naturally and the others ended after if was determined that the fetus had stop developing after 6-8 weeks. I carried one undeveloping fetus for over a month before the doctor finally said that they would take steps to remove it. It is really hard to carry a fetus that is not developing. Your body still reacts as if it is pregnant (vomiting etc). It is also really hard mentally to know that your body is carrying a baby that won't develop. For those of you who say to let natural take it course....it sometimes doesn't happen and needs help. This can be very stressful, especially since you really want a child and want to try again. I found the drugs really hard because it makes your body go into labour to expell the fetus. Two of the times I had to have a D&C after anyways as not everything came out. I found having a scheduled D&C the easiest to recover from both mentally and phyically. It was easier to focus on the future and now I have two beautiful children. The first was natural (after a D&C) and the second after IVF. Good Luck

I'm very sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage at 7 weeks also but I didn't know until 10 and my body wasn't showing any signs of expelling it on it's own. I took the pills my doctor gave me rather than a D&C (I'm not sure which ones they were though). I thought it was much less intrusive and I could deal with it at home. The only warning I have is that if you are prone to excessive cramping during your cycle, as I am, you may experience a lot of pain. My gyno, who I started seeing after this said that given my history of cramping he would not have recommended the pills for that reason. I don't mean to scare you, just a heads up.
Keep trying, be strong and remember that we always end up where we should be. We ended up adopting two great kids. :)

I used Misoprostol after my 4th miscarraige (had 5 in all). The reason for the warning is that if you are carrying a viable pregnancy, it's VERY dangerous for the baby. But since the reason you are taking it is to clear the pregnancy, it's an acceptable use. I did go on to have 2 successful pregnancies, one with IUI and twins with IVF! Keep trying! I know how tough it is, but take of yourself and you'll be fine no matter what happens!

I agree with Maria. Apart from the 3 last year I had a miscarriage before each of my other 2 children. And I was quite fertile after my second miscarriage when we conceived a month later with my 2nd daughter.
On another note I had a friend who did have scaring after a D&C and she finds it difficult to have the fertilised egg implant.

Hello Danielle. I am very sorry for the lose you have suffered. I too had a missed miscarriage and know how it feels. I did not take Misoprostal but I have checked it out for you. It has lots of uses as well as helping your uterus contract so the doctors don't give if for the other uses if you could be pregnant.
It looks like that is all this warning means.
On a separate note. After a miscarriage your body is often very fertile and you may find you conceive quickly again even though it took some time the first time around. I got pregnant two months after losing my baby and now have a 6 year old. The good news is you have conceived so hopefully you will again. I will be thinking of you.

I would suggest that you rather wait for your body to expel the fetus. I had 3 early miscarriages last year. It is better to let your body do the work, rather than use medication. I have been trying to fall pregnant after 7 months after the last miscarriage and is finally pregnant. Every time my body expelled the baby. Just give it time. It also helps with the grieving process.

Thank you all for your advice,

I have contacted the pharmacist, and he was as useful as an asshat.
I called the doctor who prescribed the medication and he said the fine-print is a technicality.
In fact, taking the medication will actually be safer for future conception than an actual D&C.
He mentioned having a D&C can cause uterine scaring, and make implantation more difficult.

For those who are wondering I do have PCOS, and 'conceived' with fertility assistance.

It has helped to hear others experiences...

I know and feel your loss. I have had 2 miscarraiges at 6 weeks and 2 tubal pregnancies, The last of which busted the tube. With the other 3 I was given methetrexate (sp?), this was 11 yrs ago. Talk to your doc and the pharmacist, they know the risks involved. If you are uncomfortable tell the doc. it is your body. Nothing I can say will make this easier for you I know. I too became resentful of preg. people. We adopted 2 children as infants from foster care. The best thing that ever happened to us. Then one day in God's timing, not ours He gave us a bio child with no problems. Keep your spirits up and know you are not alone :)

I don't know anything about the medication, but I agree with what other people have said about talking to your doctor if you have reservations.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss and I can sympathize with the pain of trying to concieve. It took my husband and I, 8 years to have our first baby. Now I'm expecting our second. By about year 5 I got to the point where I was really jealous of pregnant women or families. It is very hard. I hope that things get better for you.



I just wanted to edit to add that many things can effect fertility. You don't say if you've had testing done to see what is effecting you and it's none of my business, but if you haven't it may be helpful to do so. I have PCOS and have been on gloucophage( probably misspelled). I really attribute our success to that.

I feel your pain and frustration. Back in December, I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks. I knew something wasn't right the day I went for my ultrasound. I had the D & C which was a good choice but the visit to the hospital was the worst part by far.

I hope that you are sharing this struggle with close friends and family. Believe me it helps them to understand why you are a mess and it helps you to know you are not alone.

That one was first suggested to me and I turned it down. I had to take a different pill after waiting a week to see if my body would take care of the miscarriage by itself (by the time I took the pills there were only clots left). It didn't work for me and I ended up needing a D&C anyway. I was just happy that I didn't hemorrhage with this one like I did with my first miscarriage and after having my daughter.

I am now about 11 weeks pregnant. It took about 3 months for us at least.

My heart goes out to you--I have had 2 m/c's myself. My SIL had a missed m/c or ectopic pg after her 2nd baby and was given some medication to "flush out" her system. I don't know if it was the same, but she went on to have a healthy baby boy shortly thereafter. My 1st m/c happened naturally, but my 2nd one was like yours. My OB gave me 3 options: wait it out, take meds, or have a D&C. After going through my 1st m/c at home, I knew I couldn't do that again, so I opted for the D&C.

If the meds make you too nervous, you can just try to wait and see or talk with your dr about a D&C.

By the way, it took us 18m to conceive the 1st time, but the 2nd came quickly. The 3rd pg that ended in m/c was actually an "accident." After that m/c I had my 2nd healthy baby girl. We decided to round it off w/4 kids and it took us 8m to conceive this time. It ended in m/c, but we finally had our 2nd darling son just after my 41st birthday. God bless!

I've never had to use that drug, but I feel ur pain. I had 5 miscarriages with the last one at 14 weeks. It turned out thaat because I had previously had cervical dysplasia really bad, they had taken so much of my cervix while getting rid of the dysplasia that I practically didn't have one anymore. At 12 weeks of my next pregnancy, they put in a cerclage which ties ur cervix closed, thankfully I delivered a healthy baby (after all kinds of scares) 9 months later. 12 days later, I had to have a D & C to remove the rest of the placenta. They didn't get it all and 12 days later they had to do another one. Anyway, it all worked out in the end after about 4 years, and I have a happy healthy 9yr old daughter. I'm so sorry for ur loss and best wishes to u both!

im not sure i have been on that but in april i lost my daughter at 5 months and i naturally had her,when the dr pulled on the cord the placenta tore,she wasnt completely 100% sure she got everything out, but the same day i was discharged i had to come back cuz i passed a big clot the size of a fist pretty much,the dr that delivered my daughter tried to get it out with her hand,almost could get it but didnt wanna hurt me so they put me on meds to start contractions to see if my body could get the rest of everything out but they ended up givin me a d&c to get it out which i dont think i needed but wutever,im sure everything will be fine but if u dont feel right takin it def tell ur doc,good luck with everything!

Please accept my sympathy on your loss...I experienced 3 recurring miscarriages before the birth of my very healthy and wondeful daughter. But, I clearly remember what it looks like to see that little collapsed sack on the screen and no blinking little light going on. In my experience, they did not want to do a D&C because scraping the vaginal walls can impact future fertility...also being a heavier person they avoid any sedation if at all possible due to increased risks there. My third miscarriage I did end up using the misopostol to induce a spontaneous miscarriage...basically it is one of the same drugs used in abortions. I had an office sonogram, and then they sent me for an "official" internal and external ultrasound prior to administration of the medication to confirm non-viability.

This drug, also known as cytotec, is VERY dangerous IF you're pregnant with a live and viable fetus. It has been known to cause uterine rupture when used to induce labor. It is NOT supposed to be used for labor induction and it says so right on the package. If a woman is given cytotec to start labor she should be seriously concerned for her and her baby's life.

It is commonly used, however, to end a pregnancy by causing spontaneous abortions and expulsion of the fetal tissues. If you are wanting to get pregnant again after this loss it would be best to wait a while before trying again to ensure that:
a) the drug is completely out of your system
and b) that your body has had enough time to regenerate itself to hopefully sustain a pregnancy to term.

I cant imagine, especially if your doctor knows how you have been trying that they would give you anything to harm you for future tries. I must have something to do with not taking it incase you might be pregnant and not knowing but since you had this misfortune I would image that is what it was created to do for you. Call your doctor to ask.

You probably already know about this, but just in case, "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" is a great book for people who aren't the "normal" 28 day cycle. It might help when you feel ready to try again.

Since Misoprostol causes uterine contractions that label says that women of child bearing years shouldn't take it because it will cause an abortion or miscarriage if you don't realize you are pregnant. It's one of those funny legal things having to do with Misoprostol being used for several conditions, including treating ulcers. In other words, as long as you are using it to clear the uterus after a miscarriage, to start labor, or to end a pregnancy, that warning doesn't apply. BUT if you are taking it for ulcers, you cannot be pregnant because while it will treat the ulcers, it will also end any pregnancy.

It won't do anything long-term at all. It can be used in place of Oxytocin but even when the cervix isn't ripe.

I was 8 weeks along (5 yrs ago) when I had a M/C, but I got a D and C, they didn't offer drugs to assist in the process. I am so sorry you are going thru this. I would just do as much research as you can and take it from there.

I have no experience with it, but my recommendation would be to contact your pharmacist to get clarification about that. In my experience, pharmacists tend to be more up-to-date and well-versed on medications than doctors are. I'm very sorry to hear about your loss...
