Antibiotics & sleep?

5 days ago my 11 month old daughter was prescribed amoxicillian for an ear infection. Apart from the first night when her fever was really high her sleep patterns are AWFUL now. She has always been really easy to put to bed for naps or nighttime, just pop her in her cot and within 20 mins she happily puts herself to sleep. Now she doesn't even seem tired and screams whenever I try to put her to bed. At night she is waking up crying every few hours. Her ear infection seems to have cleared up but we haven't finished the course of antibiotics yet. I've read a few things online about antibiotics upsetting sleep, has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice?

Yep there still may be pain and it does tend to put pressure on her ears when she lays down so that would definitely make me cranky. I think once the antibiotics have cleared the infection completely you can work on the sleep situation and it may clear itself up once she starts feeling way better.

Hi yes I had a similar problem - Son finished AB's then started waking up screaming in the night several times. The answer was - INNER HEALTH PLUS - well worth trying as sometimes AB's upset their digestive system. - Hope it works for you! Got it from health shop, pharmacies sell it as well, cheers K

when my baby's are sick from anything they don't sleep right and it normally takes a while for them to go back to the patterns. But ask for ear drops those always help. Good luck and hope the baby get better soon.

Thank you everyone for your advice! She has now finished the course of antibiotics and within 24 hours is sleeping normally again! :-)

My child has been put on amoxicillian several times for ear infections. She too was always a good sleeper, however the past 6 months or so have been very different. She is not on the antibiotics anymore, but it is impossible to get her to sleep. I read that children as you as 6 months can develope sleep problems. You might want to talk to your daughters doctor about that. I know my husband has sleeping problems, as well as myself, so it would not surprise me if she too had them. The book I read said that if caught early, sleeping probelms can be "fixed". It just takes a lot of patience on your part. Good luck, I have been trying for some time now to get her on a regular schedule, but she's like the energizer bunny that keeps going and going.

Hello, My 19 month old little man has had constant ear infections from 2 month of age, He has been on amoxil so many times its not funny, We saw a specialist and we got grommets put in, So wirth the $2000.. Anyway my point is, I dont think antibiotics disrupt there sleep I think them being sick does it, As when your babies are sick you give them lots of attention and when there better they still want the same attention, We have had that happen alot.. He normally would go down fine but most nights its hard and annoying cause you know there not normally like this.. My daughter who is 3 now was the same, she was never sick and when she did get sick she was a bugger to put to bed without holding her and waiting for her to go to sleep, I do hope it gets better..

My daughter was the same way, but we just got ear drops too along with the antibiotic. The drops have helped a lot and she is sleeping a little bit better now.

You may consider calling the Dr. She may not be on the correct ABx. Also, reporting a disturbance in sleep with an ABX is something the Dr should know about.

Watch for changes in bowel movements. Sometimes things can become irrregular when taking meds and that may be just as much to blame as an infection.

My daughter has a serious illness and takes Antibiotics long term sometimes. Often it creates unwanted changes in bowel habits. Try some Yo-baby yogurt. (give it at least 2 hrs before or after meds). Should help soon!

I've never heard of that antibiotics disrupting sleep. My kids have had them a couple times each and it never caused any issues.

It's only been 5 days so I think she's probably still feeling soreness in her ear, where you can't see. Her most obvious, visible symptoms may be gone but the infection is definitely not completely clear, it's just too soon. I would say just baby her for a little while. I'd guess that it'll probably take another week to get her back to normal bedtime behavior but don't rush her or stress over it b/c then she might connect bedtime with that unpleasantness and then she'll just resist it more.

Good Luck. We all know how it sucks for our baby to be sick. :(
