Any ideas on limiting snacking between meals. I dont want to be the mom who locks the pantry.

My kids will snack on fruit snacks and eat 4 bags and crackers or they will drink 3 juice boxes. I am not always in the kitchen to monitor this. They get good meals but often are not hungry because of the snacking.

Don't buy fruit snacks, crackers or juice boxes.

Problem solved :).

Buy fresh fruits and vegetables and give your kids free reign any time to those.

Stop buying junk food so your children won't have it to eat. I know you probably don't think the foods they are eating are junk foods but read the labels. Most fruit snacks have almost no juice and are filled with sugar. Most crackers are just carbs with no nutritional value. Juice is okay but the actual fruit is a whole lot better for them, especially if they're drinking juice boxes which, again, don't have much juice. If they want a snack put out healthy choices, in limited amounts for them. Fruit and cheese, crackers with peanut butter, lean meats like turkey breast with a healthy whole wheat carb. Even if they eat so much that they don't want to eat dinner, at least they will have had healthy foods.

i put a copy of the food pyramid on the fridge door and try to remind the kids to stick to that ...they have to learn to take responsibility for what they eat themselves to prepare for adulthood. i do allow treats too though every so often maybe at the weekend if theyve been good for the week.

I agree with the rest of the ladies. the kids should have to ask first. My kids all know that from the 14 year old down to the 2 year old. Maybe you need to lock the pantry until they learn to ask. Or charge them for things that they haven't asked for (charge doesn't have to mean money they could have to "pay" in extra chores), or if they take things with out asking then they don't get snacks for the next day or two.

I was raised in a home where I had to ask for a snack before getting it, then it was always fruits and veggies. My home is the exact same way and my 17 month old has the system down already! If that doesn't work, get rid of all snacks for a month. My sister had to do that and it worked wonders! Good luck!

When my boys were school age I would give them their snack and that was all they were allowed until dinner time. If they ate their dinner they were allowed to eat a snack in the evening.

I would try this as children will eat more snacks than a meal it is human nature so take control of the situation by monitoring what they eat and when.

How old are your children? I have a rule with my nine year old that if she is hungary between meals she has to ask me to get her a snack she isn't allowed to spend time in the kitchen alone.
