Any moms out there with Type 1 Diabetic teens?

I have two teenage sons that are Type 1 diabetic - insulin dependent. One takes really good care of himself. He is 16 and was just diagnosed in December. The other does not take care of himself. He is 18 and was dianosed two years ago when he turned 16. How do you get a teenage who thinks he knows everything to take better care of himself?

I can't imagine dealing with such a young child with the disease. It has to be difficult explaining how important it is to watch your blood sugar levels. My 18 year old knows and has seen the worst of what diabetes can do. We have a friend who is blind due to his diabetes. He just thinks it will not happen to him. Teenagers think that they are indestructible. We couldn't afford the pump for him but also, I felt that he was so irresponsible that he shouldn't have the pump.

My 16 year old was just diagnosed in December and he is in his honeymoon period. It's really too soon to even consider a pump for him. He is extremely diligent though, so I don't worry about him so much. I am praying for a cure so that, one day, children will never have to deal with this horrible disease. God bless.

I don't have a teen with type 1 but my daughter is 5. She was diagnosed about 7 months ago. It is hard for a parent to deal with. Just wanted to tell everyone that goes thru this every day struggle i can only imagine what you are going thru. It's hard enough with a young child I can't even think about when she is a teenager. I have a 17yr old girl with Type 1 diabetes on an insulin pump.....HA---my daughter does the minimum work...It's sooo frustrating esp since I'm a RN and I know all the problems that can occur if she doesn't take care of herself.....
