Any tips for getting baby on the sippy cup?

When i introduced my son to the sippy cup I gave him the soft nipple type first and just kept introducing him to it over time the will learn to take it but you cant go back to the bottle once its intoduced. Its a process but they will get it.

I've always put something sweet, like straight apple juice in a cup. As soon as they get a taste of it, and associate sweet with the cup, they drink out of ANY cup! Then as soon as they like it, you can cut the juice in half with water. Good luck!

I agree with the straw cup idea. My daughter could not drink out of a sippy cup. When we were out to eat I would share my water with her from a straw. Then I discovered they make straw sippy cups, they're even spill proof...it was the best day! I gave this to her about 7 months. She loved the freedom of being able to hold her own drink. Gradually she learned to drink out of other sippy cups (with the exception of Nuk cups, still can't do it, so I gave them away). When she was a year and we ran out of formula, I just put milk in a cup at breakfast and a night time snack and we have no issues.

i have the same problem with my nine month old - we drink out of a normal cup because she just chews on sippy cups. have also tried loads - i just think some babies dont like them! try a normal cup -its a little messy!

Try removing the spill proof, my son wouldn't take to it with the spill proof in, I know it's messier but otherwise I'd be int he same boat too.

I had a really hard time as well, but my daughter took a cup with a straw with no problem! Now she takes almost any sippy cup, although she does much better with the one with the straw.

When my son was 6 months old I started introducing him to different types of sippy cups just so he could get the feel for them. At nine months old he started drinking out of them. He took to the straw cup the best and used it for a while. When he started to try to tip it up to drink I changed him to a non straw cup and now he really isn't picky about the cup he drinks from at all.

I have a 2 1/2 year old who I started introducing a soft sippy to at 9 mos. He hated it. I bought the hard tipped ones and he did a lot better. Then at his first birthday I just cold turkeyed it. I packed the bottles up so there was no temptation. He gave me a hard time for about 24 hours then he just accepted it. Straws are fun for them, but you have to supervise it well. We are also drinking out of a big boy cup now so he uses the sippy at just the sitters mostly.

well when my sons were of that age. I showed them mommy throwing the bottles in the trash. And put milk in the sippy cups.It worked. And I did this at a year old.

When we tried with my first son (we're currently working on our twins now)... we tried many different cups like you and only started with water and juice in a cup. The kind that we tried and seemed to work, had handles on it and a soft plastic top for him to suck on. The hard ones did not work and there were even ones that he couldn't get anything through.... We did water and juice from 9 months up to the year and when we could start doing milk, we switched him over to a small plastic kind that was easy for him to handle... If you would like to name of them, I can look when I get hom, just let me know... Hope that helps

My son decided he didnt want a bottle anymore and I breastfeed so I went to target and bought the Gerber Nuk Learner sippy cup, they are by the bottle and nipples! Amazing! He to this day only drinks out of that one! They are 6 bucks but worth every penny! Hope it helps!

Hello! I have 6 little ones and I have found that the cups with the soft tops are the best to help with the transition. Actually HOW you do the transition is up to you and your parenting style. You can do cold turkey or just offer only sippy cups during meals. Or try to limit bottles to beds only-something I do with pacifiers and it works great ie..."if you want a paci then you need to sit in your bed (pretty soon they don't want to stay in bed!!). The key is to be consistent, no matter how hard they cry or how cute they act, stick to your decision and pretty soon they will realize that they have to go with it and they will comply. Good luck!!

With us we let her see the bigger kids drinking out of their sippys. We would clap and praise them for being big kids drinking out of sippy. Our daughter wanted to get praise too so then she just grabed her sippy and started drinking.

First off, I'm not judging any other moms, just offering another option. I have never understood sippy cups, I think of them as just one more transition and never wanted to use them. I just offered a regular cup with water when my daughter started eating solids well, around 8mo. She took to it just fine, I held it for her. I don't allow grazing and carrying around cups throughout the house so that was not an issue. My daughter was also able to drink out of a water bottle cause its similar. So when going out we just brought a small cup or used the restaurant's and water bottles. Then when it came time to start whole milk at a year we dropped bottles cold turkey. It took a couple days for her to like milk but we added enough dairy in her diet to supplement. Now at 16mo she holds her own real cup and we have no more transitions! It was really easy for us so I wanted to offer the idea up to you. They really love to imitate adults! Good luck.

I think the most important thing is to be mindful of teeth. My children (4 y o and 20 months) both use a bottle for what we call warm milks twice a day. The bottle is drunk swiftly in one sitting and never before nap or bedtime. I'm so happy they are getting their fats and calcium etc. Water only is given in sippy cups and is available all through the day. At 4 years old my son only ever has water. Juice is a bit special every 3 weeks or so and only an inch in the bottom of the cup. Occasionally mineral water 'bubble drink' for a treat at BBQ's etc. If they have never had it, why start it. My 4 y o tells me he will be giving up his bottle at 5 years ( and since I insitisted on him giving up his dummy at 3 years and we had lots of fun toilet training (not) I think that's fine. He and I brush his teeth really well at night before bed and he really loves his warm milks. It has been great for 20 month old too as he is not overly keen on milk and seeing big brother drink means he will drink too. I think we can all get a bit hung up on making our kids drink from this that and the other. My advice would be to give baby a bottle with water in it. My 20 month old went straight from breast to straw. So maybe make Daddy drink from a straw sippy cup in front of baby all the time and let baby take it on when they are ready. No need to rush. They do everything when they are ready.

babys like the nubby on the bottle. and alot of sippy's have hard spots. i don't know if the stores have them any more. but i was able to find a sippy cup small enought for me to put a nubby on it and during a major holiday i got my child and balloon. tie the nubby to it and let your child set it free. tell him that you are giveing it to a child in the sky that need it.

this worked with all three of my children.

I tried a few different sippy cups with my son and he finally took to a Nuby. I had to be pretty consistant with it though. At first I was just putting water in it but that didn't seem to enticing to him so I started putting 2 oz of pear juice and 3 oz of water in it and tht seemd to keep him interested. But I really think consistancy is key. Hope this helps!
Now.....how did you get your son to do so well with solid foods??? lol Mine LOVES Cheerios but is VERY inconsistant with anythng else.....

You could also try a straw cup instead! My son didn't like using sippy cups, but immediately took to using a straw cup for milk, water, or juice. Plus, our dentist told me that the prolonged use of sippy cups can cause lisps and speech impediments due to the tongue displacement. Straw cups don't work the same way and will not cause these sorts of potential problems. But whether you decide on a sippy or straw cup for now, make sure to have him practice taking sips out of a regular cup too. Who knows, he may decide that he likes drinking that way the best. Our son just turned 2 and can handle any sort of adult cup like a pro, without spilling a drop!

My son is 32 weeks old and he is using a Nuby cup to drink juice. He seems to like it. There are two handles and the spout is a soft valve. Good Luck!

I have a 18 month old boy (going on 21) and a 3 month old girl. What I did with my son is go cold turkey! I read the Gina Ford routine book and she says in there at the age of 1 they no longer need a bottle, its more of a want than a need! My son refused to have it for a week but my husband and i just refused to give him a bottle. We put the sippy cup (any cup will do to be honest) with his breakfast, lunch and dinner and after his bath he has a little milk in his cup and he eventually took it. When he first saw it he screamed and threw a tantrum but now he's fine and has a cup with no lid. Trust me, you mustn't give in, just do it do it and if he wants what is in the cup badly enough he will eventually take it. It can take a week, a month who knows. If you are worried abt dairy and him not getting nutrients, try giving him yoghurts, cheese to make up for it. That is what i did!

Not to sound harsh but we went cold turkey. I gave my daughter a sippy cup prior with water or juice to get her used to it but when it came time for milk I said "here you go. If you are thirsty drink". I did not have to use it with formula because she took herself off of it at 10 months. When the bottles started to fly we went with Whole milk in a sippy cup(with doc approval). My son was the same way. Now if she sees a bottle she looks at me like I'm crazy. I use the playtex with the silicone valves. The valves can be replaced id needed and some have the hard mouthpieces which I think are great for teething-No tearing. When you find a cup that work for you buy several. They will inevitably get lost somewhere. Good luck.

Well, I've read that one way to get them interested is to start giving formula in the sippy cup. I got my son interested in the cup by giving him sips of water or juice during his meals (but not so much that he filled up on juice instead of food) and leaving the sippy cup around the house where he could reach it if thirsty.

I use the Born Free sippy cups. The nipple on them is very soft and the learn to use it by biting down on the tip. My son loved that because he chews on it when he's teething. Most of the other sippy cups have a very hard tip and the liquid just flows out. I tried several with no luck until I used the born free. We're almost completely off the bottles now. Don't give up! It will happen eventually.
