Looking to try IUD (Intra uterine device) for birth control. Haven't heard too much on this. Does anybody have any opinions or firsthand knowledge of using an IUD.

I have one and both me and my husband hate it. My periods are worst and i spot all the time. My husband can also feel it. I've had mine for about 6 months now. Im really thinking about getting it taking out and go back to the pill. But girl its totally up to you.

I'm not to sure about the IUD, I haven't heard too many good things about them. I have implanon, it's a little rod placed under the skin on the inner part of your arm. It doesn't hurt at all and I always forget it's there. It last 3 years!! It's pretty good, y ou may have spotting for up to 6 months but not much of anything after that. If for some reason you get it and don't like it they can always take it out early. Just a thought!

I've had mine for about 5 months now and for the most part I LOVE IT! at first you do have some irregular spotting, but they warn you about that when you get it put in. Even in my 5th month I still get spotting, but it's no longer irregular, I get it at the same time every month ( like a period) except the spotting is so light i dont' even use a tampon. My childs father did say at first he could feel the string, but the longer you have it in, the thinner and less noticeable the string becomes. You dont have to worry about taking pills or a messy ring, or a patch, its so nice. I would def. recommend it.

It all depends on your body! I had mine in for 3 1/2 years and just got it taken out. It did make me have lighter and fewer periods, and as far as birth control, it worked the best. But the side effects sucked! I suffered with migraines, acne, moodiness, bloating, lots of cramps, and a major loss of interest in sex.

i have had the mirena in twice, the first time was great no complaints, regular 2 day periods. had it remove to go for no. 3, success on about the 2nd day after removing. had it put back in after no. 3 with not so good outcome. alot of cramping longer periods (5 days still satisfactory but 2 days was better). they work differently for everyone and each time, so give it go and see what happens

They are great at preventing pregnancy. But the biggest problem and most common with many women is having your body "reject" it, in this case it causes constant cramping and spotting and in some cases hemoraging, the only way to know for sure is to try it. And another risk is major infection if you have more than one partner.

I use Mirena. I am on my 2nd one and they are fantastic! Personally, I have not had a period since the first one I got inserted. I know that is somewhat rare, but possible. I ahve heard some say they spot an awful lot, but to me that is a small price to pay to not have to worry about birth control but once every 5 years!!! There is a bit of discomfort at insertion (and again when it is removed) but not too, too bad. I cramped for a couple of days and then I was fine. It is so easy & maintenance-free.

I've had the IUD for 4 months and there's no more spotting. My boyfriend could feel it some in the beginning but once it locks into it's place he shouldn't feel it much anymore. The doctor can also cut the string if needed. I love it!!

I got mine about 3 years ago and LOVE it! After the first month or so I barely spotted then once a month for about 6 months I had to wear a panyliner. Since then I've had nothing! I never have to worry about pills or cramps, or periods, or carrying tampons. Its the best thing ever and I will get another when my 5 years are up with this one. I recommend it to all my friends.

I got Mirena after my first child was born. My periods got lighter and lighter until after a year, I just didn't have one anymore. Once I decided to have another child, I got pregnant almost as soon as I had it removed. It was great planning that way. After he was born, I got Mirena again. I've had it for about 6 months now, and the periods are already getting lighter and again getting to the point that they are almost non-existant. I wouldn't have it any other way because I am horrible about remembering to take the pill. And, the patch was gross. The shot gave my sister large cysts. This has been the best option for me, but it's not for everyone. The best choice for you may be different. I suggest talking to your ob/gyn about your options. There's alot to choose from!

(advice from a good friend who is a nurse) go to local dc and ask bout it. they do it at your local hospital you just need a referal. i had bleeding for bout the first week of getting it put in and havnt had a period since. i love it.

I started out with a copper coil one which was hell my periods were heavy and crampy.

I changed to the new mirena, I love it no problems at all infact my periods are very light maybe 1 day a month and sometimes not even that. And I love the fact that it's inserted and forgotten no worries about daily pills or weekly rings and it lasts 5 years and is easily reversed.

I used one after my first child because I was in my mid-thirties and my Dr. recommended it so if I wanted to try for a second I wouldn't have a long wait time for my body to ready itself to concieve again. I was fortunate because I concieved almost 90 days after I had the IUD removed. So if furture family planning is a concern that might be important to know. The other is the hormone it secretes into your body was no big deal... so I thought...when I did get it out...hmmm how to put this delicately, there was a big difference when I was with my husband privately. I won't say anymore but it's worth asking about.. I thought my poor guy had lost his touch or I was a busy tired Mom but it was the pesky hormone that interfered. I think it was an okay trade in the long run because it was considered least invasive and allowed me to quickly conceive again when we were ready.

Obviously with the comments posted its like any other form of contraception. I hated the pill, loved Depo and now after 2 kids have had my IUD for about 14 months. I haven't had any problems with it but was warned about the risks. I found it more painful that expected when it was put in but that didn't last long. All in all, I like mine but good for you doing you homework!

I have Mirena, had it inserted on October 17th, 2008. Originally, we chose to not have anymore children, but when it came time for the procedure of permanent birth control, I had second thoughts due to being torn on whether or not I wanted more children, my youngest was only 8 months old. I'm so glad that I chose Mirena, it was a bumpy road for the first 3 months, I will not lie, but your obgyn will also warn you about it too, the cramps, mood swings, bleeding, break-through bleeding, etc. etc. etc....

If you can deal with it all, trust me, after the 3 month mark, you'll be a happy camper! =) I will also admit that I NEVER know when a period is coming, BUT, my periods are down to nothing more than requiring a panty liner with no other symptoms like mood swings, bloating, however; I still get the chocolate cravings...LoL

All in all, my friend, I will be keeping the Mirena for the next 4 years and WILL replace it when the time comes. Now that our boys are bigger, I'm no longer torn as to whether or not I want more, I don't, trust me, these boys are enough. I've chosen to keep the Mirena until the E-sure method has become more advanced and by the time I'm in need of a replacement, that may be what I will do. I don't want to be cut into and have a grand recoop time.

Hope this helps in the very least... I love my IU(C)D!!!

I will tell you that if you are uncomfortable in anyway, outside of cramping which is normal, or if your man can feel it during intercourse, if has been dislodged from where it's suppose to be. I & my husband and doing constant checks on placement to ensure that it's not making it's way out through the cervix, this is something that you'll have to check continuously(this is NOT common). This may sound like alot of upkeep, but trust me, it's better than forgetting to take a pill and OOPS! I'm too old for pills and this was the BEST decision that my husband & I made.

WARNING: If you have had a c-section, do not try Mirena, I know 4 women who had to take their's out due to having too many negative symptoms and the bleeding and cramping were agonizing... Mirena and a c-section is NOT a good combo.

Good luck!

There are a lot of side effects that can occur and I had most of them from severe bloating (looking 6 months pregnant) to insomnia for a week, headaches, depression and lots of other things. Really check out the effects first before getting it! ( I had the 5 year one inplanted)

Quoting Timbrel:

i think it is a form of abortion. because what happens is the egg is actually fertilized and when it goes to implant itself in your cervix it is split in 2 killing the child

No, that is not how an IUD works. An IUD works by making the uterine lining an inhospitable place for a fertilized egg. It never gets the chance to implant and thus is passed through cervical mucus. About two weeks later most women will have their period.

I will say it again, you are not considered pregnant until the egg implants itself into the uterine lining.

IUDs work in 2 ways.  The first line of defense is to prevent sperm from entering the cervix.  The second line of defense is to make the uterine lining a hostile place for the egg to implant.  NO source I can find can tell what percentage of the time the IUD is effective doing each of these two methods.

Its not an "abortion" because abortion is defined as described above, the termination of a pregnancy after the implantation of a fertilized egg (Zygote) on the uterine lining.  BUT it is the killing of a fertilized egg that likely would have otherwise implanted and survived. (quite a semantics game)  This is why IUD producers are allowed to say that IUDs are not  an abortifacient.

I havent got the IUD yet for the simple reason my friend had got the IUD and she got an urinary tract infection and she didnt no it, and it got so bad that it went into her white blood cells, she was always complainting that she felt like she was pregnant again. i also heard u jus be cramping all the time!

An infection can't really "get into" your white blood cells. When a person has an urinary tract infection (UTI)  there are white blood cells present in the urine, which is one way to diagnose a UTI. Your friend's UTI may have traveled up to her bladder or kidneys which can be very painful. A UTI isn't caused by an intra-uterine device (IUD). The way UTIs develop is from bacteria (usually bacteria found in feces-be careful about which way you wipe) that is introduced to the urethra. Unless your friend had a very filthy doctor who didn't wash his hands or glove up before implanting the IUD then I would suspect the infection didn't actually come from the IUD but another source.

Quoting Sharalyn:

You have to have two or more babies to recieve the IUD and they are known to cause cysts, painful menstruals, and bladder infections. They last for five years though. Oh and depending, you might have to get it snipped a bit because it can 'cut' your partner when you have intercourse. Hope this helps.

This not true u do not need to have 2 or more kids, my friend jus had a baby n she jus got the iud!!

There is a new birth control called the implanon that they implant in your arm. I recently had it put in after the birth of my little boy and I'm pretty happy with it so far. My doctor advised me not to get an IUD because he has delivered quite a few babies whose moms had an IUD, and he said it gives a lot of his patienst problems by slipping out and being uncomfortable.

I would recommend NFP or natural family planning. No hormones and It only costs about $55 for a lifetime of use. It is not the rhythm method, it is a proven and very safe way for you to prevent pregnancy. Iuds may prevent fertilization of a new baby but not all the time. A baby can be conceived then when he or she travels to the uterus they cannot implant and get vital nutrients for growth. There is also an increased risk of breast cancer with the hormonal changes of conceiving and abruptly ending the pregnancy as an iud would do. There is more work involved with NFP, but you will gain a better knowledge of your own body as it changes throughout the month. Which if you were to get an infection or cancer etc.., you might notice it a lot quicker. Also, if and when you want to have another child, this will quicken the success of it.
