Anyone get pregnant while you had the COPPER IUD?

[deleted account] ( 9 moms have responded )

I just got the Paragard last Friday and I am terrified of getting pregnant. I picked the Paragard because I prefer to use something non-hormonal since I will be on birth control indefinitely. Anyway, the nurse practitioner who put it in said it's 99% effective but I'm still scared. Anyone get pregnant while it was in place? If not, how long have you have the copper IUD?

Just to reiterate I am talking about the copper IUD, not the Mirena.

FWIW I've been using the Paragard Copper T for 11 years now and have not gotten pregnant. :-D I was sure I never wanted an IUD because I am of the age who remembers hearing horror stories from the 70s. But my midwife said it would be a great choice for me since I wasn't 100% sure I didn't want to have more children and I wouldn't have to try to take a pill. My friend had one for years and loved it so I decided to go ahead and try it and to be honest - I've never even noticed it since it was put in!!

Good luck!

I had the copper IUD for 8 months and got pregnant. I'm on the Mirena now and love it. I know it's hormonal but it's such a minute amount and the hormonal distribution stays localized within the uterus. The Mirena has been good for me. Have you done more research about the Mirena? It's not as hormonal as say the shot, or even pills.

Okay now I am scared...I know there is a chance of getting pregnant but I really really really really don't want anymore babies right now, if ever. Now I don't know what to do...maybe use extra protection when I'm ovulating...

I had a copper IUD for just over 5 years. No problems save for some extra spotting. I took it out when I was ready for my second child and was pregnant within days.

Try twice!! Not to scare you or anything but i have a 2 yr old and a 4 month old who got past the paragard. I also wanted non-hormonal. I was sure it wouldn't happen again so i actually went to a different doctor after my son, but sure enough, it happened again. My doctor simply said i was "too-fertile" who knows i guess i was meant to have 4 kids!
