has anyone had their tubes tied after having making the decision that you had had enough babies?

do they do it straight after the birth if you have a vaginal delivery?

if you have to wait, how long do they usually make you wait?

im 23, are they going to try and talk me out of it?

how much will it cost out-of-pocket?????

I just had my second daughter a week ago. I'm 37 and we don't want any more. I had a vaginal delivery shortly after 7:00 pm and they did the surgery the next morning at 8:00 am. I had consulted the OB about it 4-5 months earlier, they just had me sign a form that I understood what I was doing and what it meant. When the L&D nurse sent me down for surgery she asked me where I was going and what it meant. I said "no more babies" and she said "good, that's what we like to hear". I think due to my age they were ok with doing it, if I'd been younger I don't know if they would have or not. I have a very small incision (about an inch) right below my belly button and I have little to no pain 9 days later.

Hello, I am 37 years old and I've had mine tied for 5 1/2 years now I'm in my second marrige (2years) and I have 5 sons prior to my second marriage I wouldn't change it for the world, but now my husband wants another and that's out of the question for me everyone is in school and I have two that will graduate in 2 to 3 years. I haven't had any problems, but as the others have stated make sure that that's what u want and if you're not married that when u do decide to get married that it want be a conflict of interest between you and your husband. Be Blessed!

I had my tubes tied about 5 hours after giving birth, I was 28 years old. I had very heavy periods following the proceedure and ended up taking birth control pills anyway to control the bleeding. So getting out of the hassel and expense of the pill didn't work in my case. I am 50 now and just quit taking the pill last month to see if I am in menopause yet. So I had MANY more years on the pill than I thought I would. I didn't regret not having more children as I had a step-daughter and two of my own (boy & girl). But I do wish men would not think only women can have surgery done. Men can have surgery too and go on to lead normal sex lives. Geez!

i had my tubes tied after my fourth child and i had natural birth. yhay made me wait two weeks because they have to wait for everything to go back to right place after having a child. they might try to talk you out of it since you are soo young. mine didn't cost anything my insurance paid all. if you really want this stick to it and they will let you.

hi jessica! well, i have one child but had a very rough pregnancy and labor. i wanted about 5 children before any complications arose. i don't think my body will be able to manage another pregnancy. i thought about it very hard but decided to go with the mirena birth control method instead. it is good for 5 years. i like having the possibility to make the choice that maybe, under the stress and pregnancy hormones, can not possibly let you make the right decision for you. i say really and truly think about it! i would love to try for another child, but my health and my life would be at risk again, and right now i'm not sure how to make that decision, so i'm just giving myself more time.

Yes I got my tubes tied after my baby was born. They did it the next day through the belly button. I was 20 when I had my first daughter and now 30 had my second and last. I always knew I only wanted 2 children, well I got 3 because I got remarried and now have a stepson that is enough for me. I did have to watch a video and sign papers, they wanted to make sure I was sure I didnt want anymore. I did have to talk my husband into it, I told him he had a boy with his first wife, now he has a girl and he got lucky and got another girl in the process my daughter from previous marriage. Keep in mind though I did try before 30 to have another child but never had luck which was a good thing didnt need anymore with my ex happy that it worked out the way it did. I am very happy with my decision. They may talk you out of it since you are only 23 but again it is your choice and if you have more than one child it may be easier for you to get tubes tied. Just think about it first because my sister was your age she had 2 kids by then, but now at 33 and with someone new she regrets it because he wants more kids and after 10 years reversal is near impossible. Think hard on it. I think out of pocket it is $1800. Hope this helps. :)

If you're not 100% sure try an IUD. I had one put in at my 6 week appt. after having my daughter. It's good for 5 years, and it's way easier than taking a pill everyday or getting the shot. It's also not as permanent as getting your tubes tied.

i had it done the day after i had my last child. but each dr does it differently. my dr went through my belly button cause my uterus was still high, of course. the only problems i have had, and i cramp more. i had a really bad bleeding problem, so my dr this past july (so that made lo almost 10 months) did a thermal ablasion. that has helped me a lot.

I agree with all of you guys that she is young and should wait a bit longer. You never know when you decide to change your mind. Also, keep in mind that God is the one in charge so chances are you can still get pregnant using birth control. I did with my 2 1/2 year old son. Good Luck. I think it is a BIG decision and you need to sit down and decide what is best for you.

yes almost 23 yr's ago after 2nd child first is 26 Kelly my daughter,Eric 23 my son. No regret's no pills . Easier to enjoy sexuality because no worries. They tried to convince me other wise And keep trying by suggesting what if one died, know you can't have more. I said that was to happened another child would never replace that child. Well 27 yrs later they're alive and well. And if anything did happen to any of my children, I'm past my child bearing day's are long forgotten. And cant have any more even if wanted to. Do what's best for one's self. Not what others try to tell, or use scare tactics, Good luck, No regrets..

I just had mine tied about 4 months ago after my 3rd child. My Dr tried to talk me out of it while I was pregnant (I'm 26 and I begged him during my entire pregnancy to tie my tubs after I had this baby). We talked about every other option of birth control but nothing was better for me than having a tubal. I DO NOT want anymore children. My best friend had her tubes tied after she and her husband had their twins (they had 1 older child as well). He died when the twins were 9 days old. She is now engaged to be married again and she had to have a reversal because her fiance' wanted more children. The reversal costs a lot more than the original surgery. So make sure before you make that decision that you are completely sure you don't want any more children no matter the circumstances or that you don't mind paying to have a reversal if you change your mind( hopefully it will work). At 23 your Dr might just flat out say he's not going to do it. Fortunately my Dr knows me and he knew if he didn't do it I would have gone some where else and got it done. He gave in while I was in the delivery room just after giving birth. I called and made the appointment to have my tubes tied and 5 weeks after delivery it was done.

Also I know of 3 people recently that had their tubes tied and still got pregnant (not by my Dr.) so just in case I'm still taking birth control pills for a few months. LOL

I am 27 and having my 3rd kid, and am wanting to get my tubes tied too, my doctor said that if I have an epidural during my vaginal birth they can do it right then and there right after since I'll already have the epidural in place. I am definitely going through with it, and surprisingly enough none of the docs have tried to talk me out of it.

Hi. Although I had all of my children by c-section, they went ahead and done mine as soon as I gave birth to my last one. I am not sure if you have vaginal delivery, but if I am not mistaking you have to wait a little bit, I may be wrong.

I had my tubes tied after my 2nd child, but 3rd pregnancy I was 31. Due to a difficult vaginal delivery they decided not to do it as soon as I delivered, so I had it to wait two months after. So yes, they can(and do), do it right after vaginal delivery provided everything goes well. Twenty-three is rather young for such a drastic decision so they may advise you of other less drastic alternatives and downright deny the request to do so. It all depends on how many children you have, risks factors etc. If I recall my insurance covered most if not all with regards to the procedure which was handled as a same day surgery.

Well I know here in Virginia, you cannot have it done unless you are 24 or have had 3 kids. I was 22 when I had mine done. 3 was enough for me. I waited a month after my daughter was born. But I think they can do it right after birth.. not too sure.

If you are not sure you can get the birth control (not sure what it called) its shaped like a "t" and they incert in at the doctor's office. It can last up for 5 years. My best friend has it, and she hasn't had any problems. Its supposed to be very effective.

I will warn you though. Getting your tubes tied does hurt very much. I was in more pain than in labor. I just don't like cramps, and its like one big cramp. Not sure how much it costs either, cuz I had insurance to cover it all. But I think its like 1,200$ around that area.

But its done through your belly button, so I wouldn't think it would matter if you had vaginal birth or not, but im not a doctor, and I was certain to get mine done. I will never have any more kids. If i do want more I will adopt.

I say if you only have one child, wait.. but if you have 3 or more, than I dont think you are too young at all to be thinking about it.

I did not have any discomfort or cramps afterwards....was a breeze but so were all 5 of my deliveries!!

My tubal was after my 6 week check up. The Dr asked that I wait till then. I did. I was 26 at the time. My children are almost 8 years apart. I could not see myself having any more children. I'm glad I had mine done. My tubal was done through my belly button. I went in a 6am, back home by 12pm. As far as breat feeding goes, I had pumped as much breast milk as I could, with the baby being so young, I used formula when I needed to. Depending on your delivery date, typical insurance will pay the majority of the cost, as long as it falls in the same calander year... I think I paid my 20%. If it falls outside of the calander year, you'll have to pay your deductable and whatever your insurance doesn't pay. 12 yrs ago, my surgery cost was close to 10k. I don't regret it at all. I joke and say that was the best 10k, I ever spent!! Yes, at 23 you are young, but if you feel in your heart that you do not want more children, go for it. Life is a funny thing, if you feel complete, stand your ground. The doctor will give their advice, but over all it is YOUR decision.

Hi,

I started asking for my tubes to be tied after my second child at the same age you r now. The Dr's said they wouldn't tie them until I was 30, and I asked a few from all different suburbs, the answer was the same. Now I am 32 with 4 children. As much as I love my last 2 kids, I think how much easier my life would have been if the Dr's would have listened to me. My tubes have been tied since the birth of my last child who is now 4...I haven't regretted it at all and with having the experience of a larger family I still secretly wish they had tied my tubes when I was 23..

After all that the only thing I can say..if that's what YOU truly want, then don't stop asking even demand it..for it is your life and you need to do what you can to manage it.

I had my tubes tied when I was thirty five after my fourth c-section. I'd given birth to my second son and had two daughters...but honestly I did it more for mental health reasons than anything else. I come from an orthodox jewish backround and required a rabbis permission at the time. I've since divorced and been through hell and back(thank G-d!) My ex husband is a control freak who has custody of my kids and poisened them against me but thanx to my ability to recover my dignity we've established a loving connection. I want to advise my children to make sure they can stand on their own two feet in life.. not to be too dependant on anyone.

NO, but i got an IUC called "Mirena" it is Actually MORE effective than the surgical proceedure!!! getting your tubes-tied is only has a 95% chance to prevent further pregnancies, whereas, the "Mirena" IUC is 99.89% effecticve and lasts up to 5yrs (you choose to get another one at that time). there is NO surgery and thus NO RECOVERY time, and there are no "extra" doctor-visits with having an IUC either! honestly, its like not having anything at all, except for the security of knowing there won't be any "SURPRISES"

Initally he was suppose to get the vasectomy, but he chickened out in the end, which forced me to get my tubes tied. i was okay with it at first. as time passed I would get the feeling that I wanted another baby. Now my husband and I are seperated I really regret doing it. I am still young and my very well fall in love again and won't be able to create life with the man that I love that upsets me. so I agree with everyone here you should be sure taht no matter where life takes you that you would not want anymore children. 200% sure... because theres no turning back

You seem young as others have mentioned but you know you best. As for cost.. it will depend on your insurance. Usually you will find the information under steralization in your coverage agreement. Most states with assisted medical programs such as medicaid will cover it in full with no cost to you. Private insurance thru your employer if done while you are already in for labor and delivery it will be part of your inpatient costs however if discharged and then return it is considered outpatient surgery.

I had my last child in 2000. I knew after 271/2 hours of labor I didn't want any more. Mind you I have 2 other children 19 and 16. At 31 I asked the Dr to have my tubes tied that I didn't want any more children. He totally tried to talk me out of it and wanted to be sure that that is really what I wanted to do. At the time I wasn't getting along with my husband(at the time). He went ahead with the tubal. About a year later he(my husband) and I reconsiled and I wanted to have another baby so I asked my Dr if he would undo my tubes and he told me that he would not and that he had asked me over and over again to be sure that I wanted to do this. Today I am glad that he said no because my 2nd husband and I are now divorced.

Jessica you are 23 and have alot of time to possibly have another baby, pray about this and see if it's what HE wants. How many children do you have Jessica?

I had to have mine tied for medical reasons. Yes, you should really think about it. You are young. So just wait and use other forms of birth control first. You never know what the future holds. I am getting ready to be married and not being able to have his baby is hard for me. Yet , he understands. If you have a c-section like me they did it then. I am not sure how long they make you wait. You should talk this over with your doctor.

the main reason try to discourage tubials at such a young age is because of the possibility of an unforseen tragedy of loosing your child to death and although you can never replace the child you could have another child if you do desires. Tubials do fail 1 in 400 times as well....

They will probably not tie your tubes at 23. Doctors usually make you wait until you're 25 unless you are married and already have at least 2 kids and go through counseling. After my third child, I had the surgery - they did it within 24 hours of giving birth. They went through my bellybutton - you can't even see the tiny scar. Not sure of the cost because my husband is military.

the cost is dependent on your insurance,,call them and ask..I had a tubial after the birth of my third child but it was easier because I had a c-section. I believe in the state of Texas you have to meet 2 requirements before a tubial can be done. 1) you have to be at least 25 yrs 2.) you have to have no less than 3 children and then you have to wait till your 6 weeks post partum...I have no regrets just because I knew I would be done having kids by the time I was 30 and my youngest was born when I was 28 and then when I was 29 I had to have a hysterectomy
