After i had twins i had the IUD Mirena put in( i have had it for 4 months now). I feel since it has been in i am losing my mind. I have never in my life been this moody, had this bad of crams, i cant seem to remember a thing, and i am extremely fatigued. On top of it, i was having no problem losing all of the weight from the babies just sitting around untill i had this put in. I am in the gym 2hrs a day, 5 days a week and have not lost a pound. please tell me how you feel about mirena if you have it!!!!

I had the Mirena IUD for about 15months. I also experienced mood swings, nightmares and memory problems. On top of that I had an irregular and strange period (never knew when it was coming and it was always strange in consistency/color/etc). Talked to my doc 3 times about it, he said "give it a little more time, things will level out..." yada yada. It also became more and more painful to have sex. I would cramp and spot for days afterward and I ended up with a prescription to help me try to lose weight.
In the end I checked out some websites that had other womens true experiences and discussed it with my medical doc and decided to tell the ob/gyn to take it out! Since then (6 months ago) I have lost 12 pounds and have seen marked improvement in my moods and memory. And I actually have the energy to work out now. Hope this was helpful and good luck!

I have had the IUD for five years now and after reading all of the different post about the side effects I am relieved I have found an answer to all of the whys? Why am I always so tired? Why do my breast get tender and swollen? Why am I gaining weight? Why am I moody and depressed all the time? The answer is the Mirena and I am calling tomorrow to get it removed. Thanks to all of you moms for sharing your expierence it has helped me see what the problem is and its not me its the IUD:)

I've had it for about two years now. I still had regular periods for the first year but after that, nothing. No weight issues, no cramps, no spotting or anything. I got it for the birth control effect but not having a period anymore is definitely I nice perk. I have no complaints about it and will likely get it again when time runs out.

Thank you to all who have posted comments. I wanted to add my own experience. I had a Paraguard (non-hormonal IUD) for 6 months, but I bled heavily nearly every day. I traded the Paraguard for a Mirena in October, 2011. Today, I had it taken out. The day I got my Mirena, I spiked a 104 fever. By the next day, I felt fine, and I had no side effects other than unpredictable periods for about 5 months. By May, I began to feel PMS symptoms about half the time, and my periods still hadn't regulated at all. Then, just in the last few weeks, I started getting severe cramps and breast tenderness, swelling in my legs and feet, and depressed moods. The breast tenderness got bad enough that I took a pregnancy test (negative) and, nearly as soon as that started, I began to gain weight. Now, I'm quite underweight (5'5" and 108 pounds), so this was all right, but the speed and placement of the gain (localized to my breasts and tummy and about a pound a day for a week) was quite uncomfortable. I called my gyne to see if it could be attributable to the Mirena, and she said yes. She also told me that, despite manufacturer statistics, her experience suggests side effects in 25% of women, not 1-5%. These side effects vary in intensity, of course, and I think, reading the posts here, I got off fairly easy. That said, however, when I got my Mirena removed today, my gyne found a large cyst on my cervix which correlates to a fibroid in my uterus, neither of which was there upon insertion last October.

Even after all of this, I would not dissuade women from trying the Mirena, though I'd suggest trying the Paraguard first, as it's non-hormonal. Those who don't experience side effects with one IUD or the other will have convenient, effective birth control. However, I would encourage all women who choose Mirenas to be vigilant about keeping track of side effects and to have their Mirenas removed at the earliest signs that something might be wrong. My doctor says that the effects worsen over time and that hormones re-regulate more quickly for women who get their Mirenas removed earlier rather than later. She said I should be back to normal in about two weeks, but we'll see. It's Day One, and I already feel calmer (could be psychological, though). As for new birth control methods, I am switching to a diaphragm. The failure rate is a bit daunting, as I'm 41 years old, and my only child just turned 18, so I'm certainly not looking to start over. For now, I plan to use a diaphragm in conjunction with an OTC ovulation test kit so I know which days to avoid sex altogether. It's a little scary, but hormonal birth control isn't going to work for me and, sadly, the Paraguard doesn't, either. What we need, I think, is a non-surgical option for men other than condoms. There are options in clinical trials in India; hopefully, they will come our way soon.

Best of luck to everyone, and thanks again for sharing your stories.

I HATE IT....have 7 more days before this demon is out of me. I have gained weight. I am 28 years old and never had to wear makeup. Well after a 2 weeks on the mirena I broke out terribly. Red patches and acne started appearing and disappearring randomly. So now not only is this thing annoying its costing me more money (to buy makeup). Also, I get extremely tired. i tried going to bed at 8pm and getting up at 6am and I still feel like the walking dead. I have paid more attention to my diet to make sure it wasn't the food I was eating and I started working out. Yet, i am still gaining weight and still tired all the time. I also have been having bad mood swings. my boyfriend almost broke up with me cause he couldn't take it anymore. I kow it is the mirena because during our blow up he said ever since Sept. (2011) you have been different. I got the mirena in Sept. I also have experienced pain in my legs and back. I find it hard to sleep straight through the night. Also, I have experienced baterial infections which is another side effect of this demon.

My cousin on the other hand, she has been on it for almost 5 yrs (same age as I) and has not had any problems. With that said everyone is different, but it seems MOST have issues with the mirena.

i had it and hated it. everyone i knew said it was great. but i couldn't stand the cramping and the constant bleeding. i never bled or cramped as much as i did with that stupid thing in.

ETA: i told my doctor i hated it and she told me to get over it and wouldn't remove it, then charged me outside my insurance for the visit even though it should have been covered by my insurance because it was birth control related. i ended up removing it myself. felt instantly better.

I just got my mine removed one week ago today and I feel GREAT!!!!! Soon after I got my mirena I started gaining weight like crazy. I've had it now for almost 2 years and I've gain 40 pounds. I went to see my doctor and told her that I am always so tired and I have to take a nap everyday after work just to feel okay. She said that 'it's normal for me to feel tired since I am a new mother' Hello, I was a new mother 2 years ago and I have a son who is 4 so I know it's not because I'm a freaken new mother!!! Anyways, I feel great and haven't napped since. My energy level it great. Now all I have to do is lose this weight I've gained. I gotta say, I was pretty worried about getting my mirena taken out but it was very easy and if you want to remove it then do it. I promise things will get better by the next day.

I would NEVER get it, soooooooooooooooo many risks up to death of fetus and loss of fertility
Seriously it has made women sterile!
And it has cost some women the lives of accidental pregnancies too!
It can cause cysts and cramping and pain and it can get lost inside of you.
It can give you mood swings and feel miserable.
Never, never, not for me.
I try to talk all my friends out of it
Its not too hard usually because all the risks speak for themselves.
I mostly hate the "loss of pregnancy" and "loss of fertility" warnings.
Serious risks here!
of course everyone dosnt have thes bad things, but enough DID to have it be a warning!
Some women are out there today dealing with infertility or a miscarriage due to Mirena.
I feel for them :(
(Sorry I wrote this before I saw you only want users to comment, But ill post it anyways as my facts are straight from the commercials and web site.)

I have had the mirena for almost five years and have never had a problem with it. I have never gotten pregnant and i do not get my period and i love that about it. I have been on a diet for six months now and have lost 50 pounds. I do not know if it is the mirena causing u problems, but everyone is different and everyones body reacts differently to things. I would call your obgyn or make an appt. Kinda sounds like u could be pregnant to me.

I have not lost any baby weight either but i have not gained any either. I feel good with it but it does make me sweat a little more than normal. I only have one period since it was put in and I think that is awesome. I can get cranky at times but most of the time i see it and just walk away from people. The only thing i have noticed is that when having sex my husband feels it and sometimes it is a little tender when he hits it. and also when i think im getting ready to start my period i get really bad cramps but nothing. i love the iud itself but i dont like the hormones i think that is what is making us lose our minds lol

I had the mirena put in 6 months after having my son and for the first six months I was bleeding constantly and lost weight very fast. I was constantly feeling tired and fatigued (thought it was just me) Talked to my doctor and they confirmed that it was in the correct position and suggested to take a prescription for the bleeding and to wait it out because it was a "normal" side effect to have excessive bleeding. I still am tired, fatigued, and it is very painful to have sex. I am definitely having it removed. Made an appointment and I am looking very forward to it!!!!

I've had mine since July 08. The discomfort only lasted a few months. I still have a period although it's nothing like before. I haven't had a issue with mood swings or anything of the sort. Just the normal PMS stuff. This is the best birth control I've ever been on. All of the hormonal birth controls made me mean!! Like really mean! Without the hormones I've actually been able to loose weight. It's not just falling off on it's own but working out now actually produces a result as before it did nothing.

My husband said I was completely moody the last time I had it. Since I just had my second child I decided to try it again. My husband wasn't fond of the idea but I figured maybe the moodiness was because we were going through a lot with Katrina last time I had it. We will see. I just got it back in a couple of weeks ago. No cramping.

I had the Mirena put in about a year ago. For the first 4-5 months, I could feel a twinge/some pressure in my lower abdominal area - was somewhat uncomfortable, but it went away after that. Since then, I have had no issues. I love the fact that I don't have to think about birth control!

I understand the cramping because when I had mine in the first 4-5 months were terrible. After that the cramping went away almost completely. As an added note, I was using the non-hormonal version of Mirena and didn't have the mood swings or problems with the memory (other than the normal post-pregnancy memory lapse). I did struggle to lose weight shortly after having the IUD put in, but once I started paying better attention to the food I was eating it was much easier to lose the weight. Since it is possible for them to be placed wrong, I would recommend going to your doctor and having him/her check to make sure that it was placed correctly. I would also recommend switching to the non-hormonal version of Mirena if you can (my insurance covered everything, hopefully your does too!). Then you won't have to deal with the hormones causing you problems if that's the reason for your moods, fatigue and such. I had mine in for almost 2 years and loved it. I had it taken out about 5 months ago because we're trying to get pregnant again, not because I had problems with it. I hope this helps, and good luck with everything! God bless.

I had mine in for about a year and a half. according to my other half I was a complete bitch. I knew I was moody, love the fact of having no monthly. I was tired, exhausted as well. I couldnt remember anything. I eventually had to have it taken out but now that im back on the pill i think im just as moody. although it may be related to my current home situation, im still just as frustrated. I still cant lose any weight reagardless if i was on the mirena or the pill...
