My grandson was just told by doctor, that he has a Virus - Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. Doctor cannot give him anything. She said it has to run it course in his body. But, its got to be a way to help him

It started off with a rash, and spread to other parts of his body.

Anybody have any ideas what to use to make him more comfortable.

Thanks

my son had it...its name is the Coxsackie Virus. They gave him this mouthwash of some sort. It would soothe him enough to eat and drink a little. He had it on his hands, feet, and in his mouth. I dont recall the name of the medicine but I do know the main ingredient in it was Alum and it burned a little but the relief afterward was worth it. Hope this helps.

My son had this too. Our Pediatrician said the same thing & she was right. We gave him cool baths & did not apply anything on him in hopes it would pass quicker. It did, but our son was not in much discomfort to begin with.

I have worked in daycare for 24 years and have seen a lot of hand foot and mouth, the doctor is right, time is all he needs I have never heard of any other way of treating it.

Not trying to frighten you, but my son was misdiagnosed with HFM disease when he was 18 months old. He actually had Kawasaki Disease (now called Kawasaki Syndrome). It started as a fever, then a rash that spread to his entire body. I would just get a second opinion. KD (Or KS) is the #1 cause of heart disease in children under the age of 5. And yet, there are SOOO many doctors out there that are unaware of the disease! Be your child's best advocate, and do your own research! www.kdfoundation.org Good luck! I hope your grandson is better soon!

I've worked in childcare since I was 16 and have seen hand foot and mouth many time, my son even got it at his daycare center last year, they could not give him anything cause really it does just have to run course (and what stinks was once he was actually able to go back to his daycare he still coulda gotten it agian), although other people have already stated that popsicles are the way to go if your child has any in their mouth but other than that there is really nothing

As a nurse I can tell you your pediatrician is correct. Hand foot and mouth Ds is one of the 5 classic viral rashes of child hood and it will pass in 7-10 days, 2 wks at most. What kind of help do you feel he needs? It may be unsightly but it is not usually itchy. What symptoms do you want to treat.

My three daughters had it all at the same time, it is horrible. Just lots of cuddles, Calpol and Nurofen, ice pops & ice cream, because when the sores develop in the mouth it can become very uncomfortable for them to eat. it does run its course in 5/7 days.

My son is 7 and has hand, foot and mouth disease since he was a toddler. My son gets blisters on his hand and fingers. I let it run it's course till the blisters pop on their own and then I put neosporin on it to help heal it up...so far he has no scars.Sometimes I cover it with a bandaid if it seems to bother him alot that way when he touches things it doesn't get irritated or infected. Hope this helps. From what our doctor has said it is something that he will always have that will flare up from time to time....Good luck!

your doctor is right, there isn't anything that can be done other than simple pain relief...we made a clove tea solution (half a cup of hot water with a spoon full of whole cloves, left to cool), this numbs the mouth, a sip of this made it possible for our son to eat and breastfeed when he had hand-foot-mouth. Aside from that we just had to grit our teeth and get through a few sleepless nights and some tears. Its not fun but it will pass.

A little girl I keep caught it at church. Her mom tried the Popsicles, but the only thing that seemed to help her was Tylenol or motrin for the fever. Just make sure you sanitize everything he touches...toys, books, etc. Very contagious. Good luck, praying he is better soon

I have a one year old that got it and then my twins got it. They are 3. It was horrible. I read online after the doctors appt that in most cases its not a big deal. My kids have high fevers for like 10 days and the rash. Not supposed to be itchy but it was to my kids. I put calamine lotion, that seemed too help a little. One of my twins had the rash more and the other had the mouth sores big time. Then the blisters on the hands and feet. In between toes and fngers...my poor 1 year old. It was horrible and finally ran its course and I hope they neve get it again!!

My 2 yr old son just had it. The dr told us the same thing. There are no antibiotics since it is a virus. Just keep lotion on him and give him Tylenol. I hope that helps and I hope he feels better soon!

Not trying to second guess your pediatrician, but mine told me my son had it about a year ago and it turned out that he was actually allergic to the soap I was using while sharing a bath with him, as well as the hand soap that was being used to wash his hands with at home & at daycare. Now I only use baby soap to wash his hands and they sue the same at daycare and it has cleared up. Unless the doc did a blood test, there is no for sure sign that it's not a rash with a different cause.

Hand, Foot Mouth Disease is a form of Chicken Pox. It has to run it's course just like CP. One of my sons had it and I didn't know, but I also had it, even though I had CP when I was young.

My son had that as a baby, it's caused by the coxsackie virus. My son's doctor gave me a cream to use on the rash. It helped stopping the itching.

My son had this too, and I gave him popsicles to relieve the ones in his mouth, and just gave him tylenol,or advil. Good luck, I know it can last up to 2 weeks.

My son had it about 3 months ago, on his tongue, his dr. said mix half milk of magnesia/half benedryl and rub it in his tongue. That should sooth it. Also yogurt.popsicles, bland mashed potatoes, was beneficial,

Our doctor also told us to mix 1 part benedryl and 1 part maalox And use it as a gargle. It seemed to help. Also since sometimes it hurts to eat, carnation instant breakfast is a great meal. East to swallow and full of nutrients.
This worked for my 3 year old as well as my 16 year old.
Good luck to you.

My 2 yr old had that...it's just a virus that can be picked up anywhere and they only get it once. Nothing you can do except motrin for a fever, tylenol for pain. You could use a cortizone cream if it is itchy. My son just had a fever and spots in the back of his throat.

Our pediatrician told us to mix 1 part Benadryl with 1 part Maylox and give it to our kids to help with swelling and pain. Other than that it just takes time.

I was a preschool teacher for 8 years and I can tell you it is an extremely common illness among children, and adults as well. I also have three children and all three have had it before. It is not as serious as other people make it out to be. Your child will be fine. Typically the rash only last a few days to a week. If it lasts longer or it gets worse go back to the doctor. Oatmeal baths are great, tylenol absolutely. Also Aveeno makes a wonderful anti itch cream for children which helps or you can use A & D. Also it is not from an animal like someone else said, It is a virus and it does have to run its course.

Oh my, that's serious, you need to go to the hospital - a Children's Hospital and have them check your child, that is a disease from an animal and is serious, read about it on the internet

Go to www.askdrsears.com and ask them about this. They are always a second opinion go to source. They being a father, two sons and a daughter pediatrician family. Dr. Bob is a frequent guest on our radio show, www.BetterFoodChoicesRadio.com. They have written a number of great books, the latest being The Portable Pediatrician. Highly recommend that every mom have a copy of this in their home...for the health of your family!

Just tylenol and plenty of fluids. If they have the sores on their feet put really comfortable soft shoes. My daughter caught this virus on a trip to New York.

they can only give creams to sooth the itchiness and painfull ness (like Stopaine or Panado syrup... [your local brand for pain relief]) but nothing to stop the virus.
I am so sorry for all who have it -- i cannot believe humans get this ... i thought only animals ... ;{ so sad.

There really nothing you can do. Two of my grandchildren had it they were sick one or two days then they felt better. They had blisters on hands and feet also in mouth. It takes awhile for that to clear up. It has been a week and the blisters are still there. Sorry it does just have to clear on. It's own.

My Dr. make a Magic mouth wash for my son for when he gets his horrible cronic sore throats. Here is something I found that you can check out. Either your Dr. has to make it or they write a script for the pharmacist to make it. My son says it really works! Our Dr. makes it with Lidocaine , mylanta and something else. I would think that this might work for your grandson.

No way to hurry up recovery on this one. My kids' doctor gave them something for pain and all they would eat was applesauce and chicken broth. After a few days we added rice to the chicken broth. Just has to run it's course, just like any other virus. Neither of mine got rashes though, they just got the sores in their mouth.

My daughter had this when she was three or four. She didn't really get the blisters on her hand or feet, but lots in her mouth. The doc gave us a prescription for an ointment to put on the blisters/ulcers in her mouth, which kind of sealed them, tricky to put into little mouths, but definitely helped. Unfortunately, it was about 10 years ago, so I don't remember the name of the product, but if you asked at the chemist, I'm sure they would be able to help you. We had a silver lining to our cloud, being unable to suck her fingers for about 10 days broke the habit and she didn't suck her fingers again :) Hope he's better soon!
