Babies born addicted

My doctors have me on so many medicines and I am worried that my baby will be addicted to one if not many of them. I told my OB that I want to stop before the third trimester. But even if this is possible the baby can still be addicted. Has anyone had any babies born addicted to anything? Why? How did you deal with it? What happened after birth?

I will definitley keep you updated, though it is a ways away. March 17th I am due. I will try to listen to the doctors and do everything I can to make this as healthy as possible. Thankfully the doctors and nurses I have come across are very sweet and caring. Much like you all are. Thanks again for all of the support.

Well stop worrying.

What if you were so intensely in pain you hurt yourself? falling down or passing out or unable to care for yourself in general? What could happen to your unborn child?

Your doctors think this is best and while they aren't always correct - as many as you have all working in concert... I think you're covered.

If your child was going to be born with a congenital defect and was going to require NICU care right after birth - you'd just do it right? This is sort of the same.

You can't avoid this. It has to happen this way, you're doing all you can to minimize the danger and take care of yourself. Hang in there and I hope you remember to update me/us when you're delivered (although I don't expect it to be your highest priority!)

Docs hate predicting the future. I was in so much pain during each of my pregnancies but not as much as you - I think.

Just hang in there and deal with each day as it comes.

Have you tried looking for a forum that deals with this specifically?

No diabetes. Every thing else is fine. I am on a very restricted bland diet as well. Thank you all for the encouraging words. I guess sometimes you start to blame yourself. I just don't want to see my baby in pain or hurting or unhealthy. It hurts so much to see your babies suffer. But thank you.

PRAY THAT GOD DOES NOT ALLOW YOUR BABY TO BE EFFECTED ,I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO MANAGE HEALTH ISSUES LIKE YOURS WITH NATURAL DIETS SO YOU MAY WANT TO FIND ONE OF THOSE WHO CAN HELP YOU.SOUNDS LIKE YOUR HAVING SUGAR ISSUES CAUSING THE PANCREATIS .HAVE THEY DONE A BLOOD SUGAR TEST TO MAKE SURE ITS NOT TYPE 2 DEBIETES.

I am soooo sorry about all of these issues! That has got to be hard. It sounds like they are keeping close tabs on you and your baby, and it sounds like despite everything the baby is healthy so far. It's amazing sometimes that the baby will take what it needs leaving the mommy not enough (i.e. your 25 lb weight loss, but the baby's healthy weight gain). I am sure the drs know what they're doing. I know they wouldn't do anything that would hurt the baby. And if the baby is born addicted, they know what to do. If they are taking you down in your meds, it sounds like they are trying to wean the baby off slowly. Good for you having concern for your baby! Be sure not to stress too much, though, because those stress hormones can hurt the baby, too. You'll be fine, the baby will be fine. Have faith in your doc. :) Best of luck!

That is her biggest concern, but has been lowering me from the meds every week. She doesn't like that I don't take them as prescribed but I just can't do it. So far baby is showing healthy and right on track with growth. She says she want to do an amniocentesis at 36 weeks. Not sure if it will matter at that point though. She has said what her and her coleagues have come up with is the safest we can get as far as the medicines. But other doctors have been hesitant. However I am working with a pain management specialist, a High Risk OB, my Family practitioner/OB, a Gastrointerologist, and IV Infusion therapy. I have a good set of doctors on my side, but no one can predict what will happen to my child. I feel like I am hurting my child.

Well, try looking at this way? No healthy momma - no healthy baby.

I hear you about the worries of addiction. What does your doctor say about possible addiction in the baby?

It is chronic pancreatitis caused by Spynchtor or Oddie dysfunction. Pancratitis is very painful, almost debilatating at times. The Sphynctor of Oddie is too small. They originally thought this pain was my Gull Bladder and they removed that a few years ago. The pain never stopped and they said IBS. Now, finally my liver enzymes and Lipase are showing otherwise. The problem is that I need a procedure called ERCP, however this procedure usues radiation and general sedation. Both can be very harmful to the fetus so no Gastrointerologist will touch me until after baby is born. So now I have to deal with the pain and complications of pancreatitis while pregnant. I don't take the medicines as she prescribed. I take everything normal other than the pain meds, I never take those unless I can not move. Then and only then do i take them because I don't want to hurt the baby. But when my Lipase shoots throught hte roof again I end up back in the hospital on tons of other medicines and feeding tubes and so forth.

I have spent over 6 weeks in the hospital now (on and off). I have lost 25 lbs in the first trimester, but now I am keeping weight (not gaining yet). I am quite scared as too my child being addicted to anything. I know that can mean months int he NICU not to mention years of health problems.

I want my baby to be healthy, but I need to be able to move and be healthy as well.

ok why is your pancreas spasming? I've looked and looked and I'm a top 10 googler - but can't find that as a direct symptom of anything much less treatment with an anti spasmatic? The pancreas has no pain receptors?

They have had me on numerous pain medicines. An anti spasmatic for my pancreas. Benedryl and some numerous anti nausea meds. Also an antibiotic and an antidepressant they are using for sideeffects again for the pancreas.

Addicted to what?

OBs are generally VERY careful of what they prescribe to a pregnant woman.
