What would be a good brand to buy? I know Baby Bjorn is the market leader in baby carriers but they are quite pricey

Are there any other reliable brands around?

I'm looking for something that we can use when we go travelling so we don't have to bring a stroller along.

I am short and very short waisted, I think this is the reason the baby bjorn was very uncomfortable to me. I tried a sling and a wrap, the sling felt funny because it was just one shoulder and the wrap was a pain to use. The only thing I have found that I like is the mei tai carrier. I got mine from Mei Tai baby and it was fairly pricey, but if you will use it consistantly it is worth it. They also have a pattern available on the internet to make your own, but I found fabric to be expensive enough to have it end up about the same (and a lot quicker) to just buy it. Good luck!! (also, my babies are always very heavy and chubby, I don't know if that makes a difference in what works either)

Hi Krista, the Moby wrap looks interesting. I'll explore that option further. My son is 16 months but he's a really small baby.

Hi Lana, thanks for your advice. You are very lucky to the your Baby Bjorn for 60% off! They are rarely on sale in my area.

Hi Jane, will take your advice & ask around my friends if they have one. Baby Bjorn is sure one of my favourite choice.

Hi Joyce, I've checked out the Ergo website. Pretty interesting. Seems suitable for me as my kid is already 16 months. You blog is pretty interesting too :)

I LOVE the ERGO. It has such good support for your back when baby gets bigger. The babystore didn't recommend it for newborns (it comes with an infant attachment). I used the baby bjorn when my boy was little, but once he was 6 months he was too heavy and I switched to the Ergo. I can walk for 2 hours with him in there and it doesn't hurt my back! www.babiesinthewilde.blogspot.com

I tried a couple different kinds & Baby Bjorn was the most comfortable, the other ones dug in my shoulders & didn't seem to hold my son the way the Baby Bjorn did. I used it for everything when he was a newborn like cleaning the house, hanging out w/ my teenage son, took it when we traveled. A friend of mine borrowed me hers so I got lucky with that but maybe you have a friend you can borrow or check craigs list or ebay for a used one.

I tried a sling and also a Mei Tei baby carrier but found the Baby Bjorn to be my favorite and I liked how secure I felt using it. I got lucky and bought mine 60% off but you can also find them used in consignment stores or online Kijiji for your area. They are washable so used shouldn't be a problem. Your best bet is to go somewhere that has a lot of kinds and then try them on.

A lot of it depends on the age and size of your kid. But for travel, I'm a big fan of a wrap, as I can just roll it up and toss it in my purse, and you can use it to carry your baby in many different ways. A lot of people like the Moby wrap, but instead of paying $40 for what is basically a long piece of fabric, I went and bought a few metres of a strong, slightly stretchy fabric and made my own wrap. It cost me all of $10.
