I let my 6 month old wacth the Baby Einstein DVD's. He loves them and has fun watching them. Lately several people have told me not to let him watch them because theyre bad for him and they increase the chance of him getting ADHD. I'm confused now... I thought they were a good thing. Anybody else let their baby watch Baby Einstein?

I think it is as you have heard say "all things in moderation." One McDonald's cheeseburger does not make a kid obese but if they eat them every night perhaps not such a good idea. Same thing with these videos. If you put it in while you cook dinner or grab a quick shower to provide some visual stimulation I don't think it will hurt. The books I have been reading encourage you to provide a good variety of experiences for your child including hands on time with you and fresh air. As long as the tv is not raising your kid I think it is fine. As Kerry said you can worry too much about what "they" say. The way "they" talk it is a wonder I ever survived my childhood of the 70s with all its metal toys ect to be a Mom lol!

If we worry about everything 'THEY' say (who are THEY anyway?) we will go crazy and overthink every choice we make as parents.. TV in moderation never hurt anyone. I know I watched way more than my kid does when I was little and I am normal (what is normal anyway?).. Besides soon they will tell us that the internet causes cancer, same as the poison in plastic, and chemicals in food. Not to mention that the sun is killing us! So my advice is to wear sunscreen while you play outside, check the numbers listed on the bottom of plastic (3, 6 and 7 are bad), eat somewhat healthy buying local and organic only if it does not cost an arm and leg. And ENJOY the 20-30 mins a day that your baby is watching the DVD so you can at least take a shower or eat something!! Your kid will be better off and WAY more healthy/happy if his Mom is relaxed and NOT crazy from being worried! :)

My 2-month old just finished watching one with me! She loves to look at things moving around, so we watch them together and I talk about everything they're showing. I did the same thing with my first (now 4 years old) and people are always telling me how bright she is and how well she listens. I know that's not just the Baby Einstein, but watching DVD's didn't rot her brain.

Whenever I'm made to feel guilty about how I'm raising my kids, I just remember that our parents did tons of crazy stuff with us when we were kids and most of us turned out just fine :)

i found that baby einstein was a waste of money.  i own a few dvds spant a lot of money on them.  my daughter never really wastched them because she found them boring.  sure they are suppose to help them learn but you can help with that too.  oa great thing to teach through a child is reading a book to them and point out colors, shapes, animals etc.  when your child reaches a certain age they'll tell you what they can find.  for example my daughter who is 2 now knows all of her major body part, can count to 5, colors, shapes and certain cartoon characters.  it depends on how you want to teach them.  but i've never heard of baby einstein giving them adhd...if that was true i dont think they would still be releasing them or pediatricains advising them.

We alternate between Baby Einstein's and Veggie Tales and we've been doing this since my son was maybe 6 or 7 months old.  One half hour a day isn't gonna hurt him or cause him to have ADHD.  Besides, even at 17 months he can't sit still long enough to watch the whole thing.  I watch more than he does lol.  By the way, if you haven't seen it, watch Veggie Tales.  I wanted my son to watch something that would have a moral to the stories and  Veggie Tales is basically bible stories told by cartoon vegetables lol And they sing silly songs.  I'm definitely not a "religious" person but it's nice to see God simplified for little kids.

all my children watch those movies...they love them. They are very educational..my 3 children have learned lots of words compliments of those shows. And to develop ADHD, i think not. Your child would not have the attention span to even watch them if that was the case. I do agree that they should not be in front of the tv for more than an hour at a time, but these shows will not cause ADHD. They introduce your child to color, words, music, brain stimulating things that they need to grow.

Whoever told you that obviously doesn't know much about metal and behavioral problems. A television program of any type can NOT cause ADHD. I'm now a stay at home mom, but I use to be a social worker and worked specifically with children who had ADHD and autism. I agree that you can't prop you baby in front of the TV all day, but you can use it as some fun time between you and your baby or even to get the dishes washed, laundry folded or what not. My son, who is now 21 months LOVES baby Einstein and he is developmentally fine.

If you are worried about ADHD, look at your family history and do your research. I found that a lot of the kids I worked with were getting way too much sugar (juice, candy, soda) and not enough exercise or sleep. Just keep that in mind.

the pediatric suggestion is they children should not be watching tv until they are two years old. Letting them watch tv before that (on a reg basis) has shown to decrease intelligence. And the suggestion  is when they are old enough to watch tv, parents should be watching it with them and interacting. you can probably research the tv --> ADHD correlation on pubmed to verify wether that was in fact a finding of some research study. I personally feel that letting them watch tv so early came be overestimating. But if you let your 6month old watch it in extreme moderation than it probably doesnt matter.

My 10 month old son and I have been watching Baby Einstein DVD's for months as a "wind down" at the end of the day before bedtime routine. We snuggle up together under a blanket and I can feel him relaxing as we watch (he's a VERY active baby throughout the rest of the day). I think that, in moderation, Baby Einstein is a wonderful way to bond with your baby.

I have heard that too much TV can cause focus issues. It's over stimulating and for children with ADHD it can make things worse. (So I've been told). I think as long as he's not sitting infront of it all day there isn't a problem. Right now, I'm about to turn on some Noggin so I can get a peaceful shower in (lol)

Personally I dont think you should just let him sit in front of the tv all day, he's way too young. But it's fine if you let him watch maybe one a day. They come in handy if you need to take a shower or get dinner done, and need the baby distracted. But he isnt gonna be a genius if you're letting him watch 4 hours of puppets everyday.

Goodness..you cannot contract ADHD...that's a genetic thing.  If your little one loves them...fantastic. Anything in moderation...Just not too much dvd watching....
