Baby gate for a spiral staircase

I have a black metal spiral staircase... (here is a picture) http://www.theironshop.com/vic_spiral_st...
My son is starting to get curious about how to climb it! I have tried to put a regular baby gate against it... that doesn't work. There's no walls or bars big enough for the baby gate to 'bite' and stay secure. Has anyone else got this same staircase in their home? How do you baby proof this?
I have just as much of a worry about gating the TOP of the stairs as the bottom. The stairs are open on TWO sides and he not only has the risk of falling DOWN the stairs I also have to worry about the sides too. From both the top and the bottom they are open and he could fall.
Is there a baby gate out there for this application? I haven't found one... but I could be Googling it wrong. Any 'homemade' suggestions are welcome too... I'm not above that and I have a handy husband.

Oh and they have balcony safety products too, so I assume you would be able to adapt them to the stairs....
