Regular or video? Specific brand? I want one that will do that job that isn't all crackly. We have a home that is about 2500 sqft overall. My husband likes the idea of the video monitor but it may be out of our price range.

I agree with the comments that you won't regret saving up for the video monitor. We have the Summer video monitor and LOVE it. Our house is also around 2500 square feet and we've used the monitor everywhere. We don't have the portable one, but the screen part is not too big that I can't just unplug it and take it wherever I want. At our cabin we have just a regular old sound monitor and I have learned how terrific it is to have the video monitor.

We used the Angel Care Monitor for all of our kids. We loved it. Yes, we had an occassional false alarm when the sensor went off due to our babies rolling off the pad. We just adjusted the sensitivity of the pad after that. We still use one in our twins room without the pads. Once you are past that fear of SIDS you can disconnect the pad and still use it as a regular monitor. I know one of our monitors is at least 4 years old. We definately got our money's worth.

The Angel Care was my favorite 2....I was able to use it for 2 kids, about 3 1/2 years before it died.  Loved knowing tha tif my baby quit breathing I would be alerted.  it worked! It  sounded in the middle of the night for both my kids....

I definately recommend the Angel Care Monitor. My husband and I loved it. You didn't have to look at a monitor to know your baby was ok, just listen for the the ticking.

Definitely video!  Not only does it give you peace of mind cause you can watch your little one, it's also hours of entertainment watching what they do when no one is around.  I have the Summer brand one that is handheld.  You can clip it on your belt and do all the things you need to do while they are asleep...shower, chores, check the mail, etc.

I recommed the angel care monitor. My son was 6 weeks premmie and it was a total life saver for us. It monitors the chest compressons of the baby. If the chest does not compress over a 20 second time period an alarm goes off so that you know to go check on your child.  it is a pad that goes under the mattress in the crib. Later on, as the concerns for SIDS lessons, then you can switch to to be a regular monitor.

We love the sound and lights monitor. The video monitor did not work well for us. The sound and lights is great. You dont have to have the sound turned up during the day and when you see the lights you know they are awake. Then at night you have the sound on and when you hear them you can check the monitor to see if the lights are going to see if they are really crying.

I didn't think that we needed a video monitor when we got one as a gift. I was like, "Our house is only 1200 sqft, we can hear him if he cries!" I'll tell you what though, I can't live without it. It's so nice to be able to look at my son with out having to go into the room and disturb him. I Highly recommend it and do to anyone that is having a baby. It's a bit pricey but worth every penny! Maybe some of your friends or family can go in together and buy it for you. I have the Summer brand Video Monitor and it works great! Good luck and congrats!!

We bought a Sony. I think it was $55. It's been great..no video for us. That seemed to "big brother-ish." I used it a lot in the beginning, but you'll soon find that you can hear your new baby from anywhere...like dolphins in the ocean. It's crazy! We never use ours any more. It has 3 channels on it and we never once got interference or crackling. Good luck!

We used the Angel Care monitor with the sensor pad, too. We loved it! It only went off once, when my son pushed himself off of it, so I know it worked. I will use it again and have told everyone I know about it. Good reception unless it's near where my cell phone was plugged in.

I have a Summer video/sound handheld model. It was about $170 at Babies R Us. I absolutely love it and it has saved us many trips into the nursery. The picture and sound are both good and you can turn the picture off if you are sleeping and don't want the light from the screen shining on you. I'm a new mom and probably overprotective, so I constantly want to know what's going on. It helps to be able to get a quick glance and also hear what is going on. It's by far one of my favorite baby items!

Personally I like anything with a picture. Having a video one is great because there is times when my daughter would cry, and it just be in her sleep, but if I would have opened the door to check on her she would have woken up. Having a video monitor has increased her sleep time and my alone time :D

regular or video is a personal preference and depends on the size of the house. in this day and age, i recommend a digital one rather than an analog one, especially if you have a lot of cell phones/cordless phones & a wireless network in your home -- digital ones don't interfere with those. they are also good for apartments (less interference from neighbors' tvs, computers, etc.). from there on out, it's really up to you. if your baby likes to roll over & sleep on his stomach, then u might want to invest into one of those crib sensors, if not, u don't really need it -- more false alarms than anything. I went with graco digital, works fine for us, except depending on how good you are at charging the units & how long will u need it to work, i would get the one with 2 parent units, just to make sure u're not as inconvenienced by having to re-charge the parent unit. i would also talk to people from radioshack or bestbuy (those tend to be most knowledgeable) about what you have in the house as far as electronic equipment and frequency it works on, from there on, u'll get a more clear idea about the kind of baby monitor you will need that will have the most amount of range/be most user-friendly with the least amount of interference. good luck!

We used a different idea. They now sell phones with a very nice room monitor feature included. We had one a few years ago but the GE 6.0 system is awesome. It has both regular handsets and speakerboxes which can double as the stationary baby monitor. We loved ours so much we upgraded the system and have 4 of the speakerboxes mounted around the house in rooms wear the kids normally are. I can monitor any room without them knowing about it. The speakerphones can be moved around at will if I choose. And the best part is I always know where a phone is (I can never find one when it's ringing). Only the handsets can make outbound calls. Oh, and the phones also have intercom capabilities, so you can yell at your older kids without waking the baby.
This was our solution to avoid buying a monitor that we would only use for a short time. The price was under $100 for 2 handsets and a speakerbox.

You won't regret shelling out some extra money for a video monitor!  If you have enough gift cards to cover it go for it, the peace of mind of being able to see your baby breathing in their crib while you are still laying in your own bed is great.  Especially helpful when you are trying to let them get to sleep on their own and don't want to risk creeping into the room.

We have the "Summer" Brand video monitor ($179) from Target.  It is the one with the handheld picture and sound.  I personally love it because I can see the baby and determine if I need to go in and check on him.  The picture isn't by any means "HD" but, you can see your child clearly in black in white.

We had the "Fisher Price Lights and Sounds" with our first child.  It worked well but, I was always getting up in the night to check on her because I couldn't see her....I may be a little overprotective.

I love my Angel care with the mat that is placed under the crib matress.  It was a life saver literally when my five month old had a severe cold and stopped breathing a couple of times during the night.  Even though she sleeps right next to our bed in a crib I would have never known without this monitor.

NONE!!! They just stressed me out. If they cry loud enough to be pick up then you will hear them!!!! But sometimes with monitors you can hear every little noise and it keeps you awake.

I love the AngelCare. If your little monkey moves around a lot you may have to re-adjust the sensor pad once in a while or you may get false alarms (like I do). It definately lets me and my husband sleep better at night. The sound is great unless it is sitting on top of the dishwasher when it is running (then I get a little bit of static). We looked at the video monitors but felt that it wasn't necessary. I like that you can either hear the ticking everytime the baby breaths or turn it off and just have a small light blink each time. This one was definately worth the money.

Oh and it even has an option to turn the picture off, for when you are sleeping at night. You can still hear baby and if you want to check you just turn the switch.

We bought the safety first video monitor it was $200 Canadian, but so worth it. It works great as far as sound goes you can even hear your baby breath.

We had simply bought the Fisher Price 900mhz to start testing monitors for your same concerns. We live in an upper level of a house & monitors are also being used in the Lower level & 2 of our neighbours. We get nothing but a cristal clear reception, no static or interferance. We've mounted the unit to the wall right by my son's crib to help hear his breathing more. This monitor does the job & I don't remember it costing much.

We are getting a video version simply because my son wakes & plays quietly for 1hr or so before we hear him start babbling away. He'll also play in his crib for a bit before curling up for his nap. The video will be helpfull to let me know when he's fallen asleep/woken up without making noise walking into his room to check-up on him. The non-video will do the job for my next boy due in May.

Hey there, i don't beleive that you need a video monitor, out of all three of my children i have used many types and i completely agree that the crackly ones really suck!!! i have found that the best one i have ever used is the angle care. it does not crackle and i only provides sound when the baby moves or cries, and i also has a pad that provides extra safety for movement in order to prevent sids.

Hope this helps.

WE love the angelcare monitor! Our daughter never stops moving at night and it helped to put my mind at ease. We had a few "close calls" where the monitor's alarm went off and she was stuck in the corner of her crib. I wouldn't get any other type of monitor- in fact my parents have one at their house too for naps.

We LOVE the video monitor! My son is a noisy sleeper and with the regular monitor I was up and down the stairs a million times for nothing. My husband insisted on some super techy sleek home security baby monitor that crackles...I much prefer the Summer Infant one. =) The price is totally worth it! It's also adorable to "spy" on him when he's just playing and babbling in his crib.

We have a video monitor.  It's by Summer and it's the handheld monitor, which is more convenient than the stationary TV one.  We got it at Babies R Us 3 years ago and have had no problems.  The cost was a little over $100 if I remember correctly, but it's well worth it.  The picture is very clear even when it is dark and no crackling.  I could actually hear my daughter breathing when it was turned up loud enough.  I also believe you can use two video cameras with the one monitor (you'll have to check on that).

We also tried the monitor with the breathing pad.  We didn't use it very long b/c when our children started to move & roll over in bed the alarm would go off.  We've gotten alot more use from the video monitor & we still use it even though our kids are 5 and 2 1/2.  It's nice to know when their playing instead of sleeping :0)

I found the Angel care monitor to be great!!! it has a sensor mat which you put under your babies matress, and as they breathe, it lets off a little click. so you can be reasured that your little one is sleeping safe and sound :)

i found the sound quality to be really good and if you dont want to hear the clicking, it has a little light which shows on each breath too.

it certainly put my mind at ease, and my brother and his wife decided on buy this one too, they were happy with it also :)
