I have heard that Talcum powder (most baby powders are talc-based) can cause cancer (talc particles are closely related to carcinogen asbestos particles). It is best to use pure Cornstarch or Pure Cornstarch baby powder. Talc can also cause respiratory problems if it accidentally gets ingested (if you apply it directly to the baby or if you put too much in the diaper and fold it up it can cause a plume of powder headed directly to their nose/mouth region). So use cornstarch, pure or the baby powder version, if you still want to use powder but don't want to chance your baby getting cancer later on.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

Quoting Kelsey:

I heard inhaling the baby powder causes respratory issues, not cancer. LOL! Everything causes cancer! ;) Baby powder really isnt something you need to use. As long as your changing their diaper often you are pretty much doing all you need to do to avoid diaper rash. I know many babies get it despite this, but I dont think using baby powder would really help all that much. I dont think its worth risking his respratory health. Diaper rash is much less dangerous! :)

Well, I agree with you somewhat.. I have always used Cornstarch baby powder on my son and until he was about 15/16 months, he never had a diaper rash (though he did break out from a certain brand of diapers, but that cleared as soon as we switched brands). Also, if you're safe about it, it should be fine. I always lightly sprinkle a little bit in my son's diaper, just enough that it keeps him dry and it doesn't get in his face.

I have never used baby powder on my son, but I know my mother-in-law has. I'm not sure about whether it can cause cancer or not but I am pretty sure the only way it could is if it were ingested. So, Christina's comments concerning it getting into the babies face I totally agree with. From what my mom had told me...if I was going to use it it is best to put some in your hand and then on the baby so you don't have any of the airborne particles getting into your babies lungs. If you're doing that I would be inclined to say your baby should be fine. I hope this helps.
